Researchers in Athens, Ga., Trying to Determine if Second-Hand Smoke Outside Poses Health Risks

Could second-hand cigarette smoke still pose a risk to us, even when it is outside in the open air? That's what researchers have set out to prove. Their findings may surprise you. According to Science Daily, researchers in Athens, Ga., have set out to prove that second-hand smoke

is increasing outdoors, due to the increase in smoking bans in bars and restaurants. They had hoped to discover whether or not the extra smoke outdoors is causing a significant increase in air pollutants for those who frequent the areas.

Being that Athens is a college town with many students, researchers were concerned for the health of the students. Students are often seen gathered together in large groups outside of businesses with some of them smoking, which means there should be a large amount of exposure to the second-hand smoke. According to the researchers, their findings could lead to bringing more attention to cigarette smoke to policy makers who regulate these decisions.

Athens has over a hundred bars and restaurants. The city banned smoking in these establishments partially in 2004. A full ban was set in place in 2005. Now, it is common to see smokers gather around a general area together outside in order to smoke and converse. This is a more common occurrence since the smoking ban was put into place. It has left smokers no choice but to smoke outside, which leads to many of them smoking right outside the establishments.

Interesting concept Peeter. That would definitely help the indoors problem. If the people were not all gathered in one place, it could definitely ease up some of the outdoors problem as well. A full ban is likely the only way it will completely solve the problem, but that might cause an uproar and an even bigger problem because then there would likely be illegal sales, just as with other drugs. I don't even know the answer. It's so complicated. All I ask is that cigarettes (and any other smoke or chemicals) stay far away from my asthmatic kids. Before cigarettes were banned from the restaurants, we would only pick non-smoking restaurants. It's nice to be able to go to any facility now, so I do think the restaurant ban helped some.

The answer to the problems with all the dangerous air is to ban smoking indoors and move the smokers further away from buildings.

I agree Linda. Drinking is horrible. I don't drink or smoke. They are both bad for us. Maybe I'll do an article on drinking. I'll probably get hit by downraters galore, but I think the word does need to get out. Thanks for the tip. I hadn't thought about doing a piece on that.

I know cigarettes aren't good for us. But what about drinking. All I ever hear is cigarette smoking and the harm it causing. But drunk drivers kill people every day and hardly anything is ever said about it. And no, I don't smoke, never had, never will. I don't want bad breath or yellow fingers. I just want tighter drinking laws.

I think that the smoke from cigarettes is underestimated - and this is such a great article and sheds light on some information that is important to us all! Thanks!!
