Displaying an urn on a mantle over a fireplace helps induce creepy feelings in scary movies or mystery stories. However, for those who choose to display an urn, it is a way to remember and feel close to a deceased loved one. Unfortunately, the creepy feeling caused by seeing an urn causes many people to consider no other option but sprinkling the ashes in a special place. Luckily, there is an alternative to urns. Cremation pendants and key chains allow a person to save some of the ashes, also known as cremains, without having to display a large urn.

Cremation pendants are hollow jewelry pieces worn on a chain. This makes them appealing to people who have been given gold or silver chains that once belonged to their loved one. The pendant is filled with a small amount of cremains and can be worn casually or put away as a keepsake. A threaded stopper is used to seal the pendant or keychain. Cremation pendants can fit into most budgets with the starting price averaging around 100.00 and topping off at close to 1,000.00 if diamonds are included on the pendant. Cremation pendants can be gold or silver, etched or engraved. Pendants vary greatly in design and a pendant that represents the deceased's personality should be easy to find. Some pendant designs include hearts, crosses, glass lockets, angels, doves, butterflies, sea turtles, boots, teddy bears, golf clubs, leaves, flowers, and more. Depending on the design, some pendants can be engraved with a name, date, or other special word. There are also cremation pendant rosaries that include a cross pendant to hold cremains.

Well written presentation of a difficult subject. To quote Dr. Wayne Dyre, author of 'Power of Intention': "Change the way you look at things, and things begin to change."

OHmygodd - we are going back to 18th/19th century funeral practices. I always thought that the lockets with hait inside them and the bracelets woven out of human hair of the deceased were creepy. Hair is so much more durable than the rest of us...

I guess it's less creepy in the sense that unless you tell someone you're wearing someone's ashes around your neck, they're not really going to know. Whereas if they walk in to your house and see an urn.....Meet the Parents keeps coming to mind for me :)
