Spending time with your teenager is important because it keeps the relationship close. Many parents tend to drift from their children once the teenage years arrive. The teen often becomes busy with school activities, work and social functions. This doesn't have to happen if the parent and teen make every effort to get together at some point during the week. Set a special time every week to do something fun with your teen. Ask your teen when would be a good day and time to get together. Both parents and teen should do everything they can to keep that date. A helpful tip is to always set the same day and time then either of you are less likely to break that date. I have come up with some simple things you can do to have fun with your teen.

Play games with each other. Take your teen to the store and have them pick out a couple of board games they would love to play with you.

Have a picnic at the park, beach or lake. This is a great way to have fun and be able to spend some quality time with each other.

Go shopping. This is a great tip for mother daughter relationships. Most women love to go shopping and it is a great time to chitchat.

Have lunch somewhere fun. For example, go to a dinner theatre or a local dinner cruises. This will help both of you to relax, talk and have fun.

Go for a walk. Enjoy the weather and talk about your day. I bet when you share about yourself your teen will be likely to share what's going on with them too.

Bake a cake. Make a cake or some other fun dessert. This will be fun activity to do together. When you're done you can both eat it or give it to someone who could use some cheering up.

Watch a movie. Find a movie you both would have fun watching. When the movie is over talk about what you liked and disliked.

Take a fun class together. For example, hip-hop dance class, art, bowling, scrap booking and anything else that comes to mind that you both would enjoy.

These are some simple tips on how to have fun with your teen. Your teenager will appreciate the time you take to spend with them doing something fun. Always ask for their ideas on what they would like to do. There could be other fun activities that they enjoy that have not been mentioned in the article.

During the teen years many children turn into recluses or else spend every waking moment with their friends. But I'm sure there are some who would like to do more with their parents though. Sophie
