You’re peddling along but you’re not passing by any scenery to keep you engaged, and yet, the time just went. That’s because you’re so immersed in finishing that great mystery paperback on your stationary bike you don’t even notice the time flipping by. And you haven’t been a passive sitter just reading, either. You’ve been on your exercise bike, sitting in the comfort of your home, and getting the best workout. Exercise bikes truly give you the chance to do two things at once. With stationary bikes you don’t have to watch for the traffic. And what could be easier than peddling your bike while watching what you like any time of day or night, snow or rain, near your own bathroom and facilities…..all the while getting the exercise you need for weight loss, for aerobic benefits, and for muscle training. Bicycles are loved by us all as probably our first big toy present. And still today most people would consider bike riding a pastime rather than exercise. So if you’re looking for a great way to exercise its really just one sideways step to transfer that eagerness to a stationary model. Check out the great availability of stationary bicycles for home use. Today, they are easily portable and can be placed in front of a window, or maybe on your porch or balcony. They come with many features including workout programs, time calories and pulse readouts, heart rate monitor, and some even come with an adjustable fan and water bottle holder! Now just because these cycles are called stationary because they stay in one place does not mean this is a passive exercise. You can get as much work for your cardiovascular fitness, you can tone your butt, it’s a great leg builder, it strengthens your quads and hamstrings, and it is a fantastic calorie burner for weight loss. A 155 pound frame can burn about 900 calories an hour. There are available a large selection and price range of these stationary bicycles and it’s best to read reviews of some of them to decide which features will suit your needs. It’s also best to try sitting on a few models to see whether you prefer a traditional upright model, or the new design in recumbent bikes which seat you in a partially reclining position. Just think about the following pointers: • Make sure the model you choose will be sturdy enough for your weight • Is the bike quiet enough? • Are the seat and handlebars adjustable enough for you? • Can the resistance be easily changed without having to stop? • Does it have a good warranty? So don’t think passive thoughts about riding a bike that’s stationary! An exercise bike at home can be the way to get you where you want.

I'm amazed that the stationary bike wasn't more than a fad. I still associated it with the '80s, but obviously it still has its place in fitness. Thanks for the info!
