Ninja Gaiden, which is now available on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console, was first released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989. According to Wikipedia, this first Ninja Gaiden game was based on the arcade version and was very similar to another game called Double Dragon.
The first Ninja Gaiden game started many features that would be seen throughout the series. The first game was loaded with cinema style scenes between stages. This was unlike any other Nintendo game released during its time. The Ninja Gaiden series is known for being incredibly difficult to beat. If you made it all the way to the final boss, and were killed, the game would send you back to the beginning.
The series starts out with a ninja named Ryu who receives a letter from his dad. His dad has been missing and tells Ryu that he needs to go to America to find two hidden statues. He says the two statues can bring and end to the entire world. And so, the Ninja Gaiden adventure begins.
With the success of the first game, Wikipedia reports that Tecmo went to work and released a sequel, Ninja Gaiden 2 The Dark Sword of Chaos. They released this game one year after the first game, in 1990. Ninja Gaiden 2 continues the story and characters from the first game.
One new feature in Ninja Gaiden 2 included the new ability to climb walls by simply pressing the up or down button on the Nintendo controller. In the first Ninja Gaiden game, Ryu could only attach himself to a wall and was not able to move in any direction.
