Rudy Giuliani on Immigration and the New Immigration Bill
Immigration and illegal immigrants are a huge problem in our country today. Many companies' employees are either a majority or all illegal immigrants. Why? They can pay them half of what they need to pay a citizen. My family has experienced this firsthand. When I was laid off in July of
2007, my husband was looking for a job; he is in the construction field, so he went to construction companies in our area inquiring about open positions. Many offers were for a laborer position for five dollars an hour. This is because the man's entire crew was made up of Mexican immigrants. Our family has five children, five dollars an hour wouldn't even pay for food in a week, let alone any bills!
Therefore, the issue of how to deal with illegal immigration is an issue close to me. The Senate's new Immigration Bill will allow the inflow of approximately sixty-six million new immigrants into our country over the next twenty years. It will also grant the illegal immigrants that are currently here amnesty, and give them citizenship.
Where does Republican Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani stand on the Senate's new Immigration Bill? In short, he considers the new immigration bill "hodgepodge". Rudy Giuliani states that the purpose of the new immigration bill is to track those immigrants who try to cross our borders, and that the Senate's new Immigration Bill will not accomplish this goal.
I do not agree with Rudy Giuliani's statement that he is willing to compromise on legalizing illegal immigrants; I believe that they broke our laws, and that we should not reward them with what they want: citizenship. What message will doing this send to our citizens? That it is OK to break the law? If we grant these illegal immigrants citizenship, they will tell friends and family members in their native country, and the immigration problems will compound. Nothing will be solved at all by Rudy Giuliani's ideas.
