Children need to learn. Children need an education. An education begins with repetition and retention. Children's minds are not strong enough to survive on independent thinking. Not yet. It is through repetition and retention that children can discover where their minds work best, what they enjoy the most.

Me, I hate math, but I got through it. My son, he hates math, and he is struggling like the dickens, but he, too, is getting through it. He realizes the importance of it.

Every day after school it is homework time. They do their homework at the kitchen table, while I am preparing them a snack and am there to oversee their work as well as be of any assistance if needed.

Would I rather them be outside playing every day until dark instead of only an hour or so most days? No. Because I know they will have weekends for that. I would rather they learn first, play later.

Do they complain? Of course, what child does not complain? I did and I am sure you did, too.

But I still know my multiplication tables. I still know the capitals of all fifty states. I still know the seven continents. I still know how to diagram sentences. I even remember fractions.

These are just bits of knowledge that I learned from repetition and retention. It has helped me throughout my life and has assisted me in helping my children with their learning.

Homework provided structure and boundaries- which all too few children receive.

Homework does not hurt our children, or us. Homework enriches a child's gift of learning.

So many parents today think that schools place too much emphasis on homework. Do they really think that or is it just the time constraints of two working parents, coupled with the grumblings of children's time- homework, athletics, social activities, and family time as well as simple 'me time' something all children need.

If we give in to the complaining of too much homework- what will we give in to next?

I can still recall all the science projects I completed when I was young, and my children, although grumbling all the while, remember theirs that they have already completed.

I agree that homework is beneficial for children. I did not start receiving homework until I was in middle school though. Sophie

I read this article because I am writing a paper on this very subject. What I noticed is the author does not fully answer the question is too much homework detrimental to a child's health. How much homework is reasonable? I have four children, two adult children, a teen about to start highschool and a toddler. As a child progresses through school, in most cases, they recieve more homework according to grade level. Last year my youngest son, the one going to highschool next year, would have at least 4 hours of homework a night. He did not go out for sports last year because he did not want his grades to slip caused by the amount of homework that is assigned. He sacraficed playing soccer, a game he loves, so he could get good grades. He is a straight A student. Learning comes easy for him. Can you imagine how difficult it is for an average learner or a child that struggles, to fit extra curricular activities in their weekly schedule along with too much homework. Our children are expected

I have two opinions on this... YES, there is getting to be too much homework assigned, so much so that I think a lot of times PARENTS end up doing their kids' projects, homework for them which I can't stand the thought of. IF LESS homework was assigned maybe kids could learn AND have time to enjoy themselves. If we paid our teachers more, we might have more effective ones that could teach enough IN the class..

Homework is fine as reinforcement, but when teachers send hours and hours of work home with elementary aged children it is ridiculous. My daughter is very bright and gets overwhelmed. She has a support system to help her if she needs it and to reinforce her work. Now imagine the kids who are really struggling and have little or no support system at home. Those kids fall through the cracks. I think part of the problem in some places are shortened school days.

A wonderful eye opener! I don't believe in "homework". I think school work needs to be done in school, but that parents should implement some sort of "educational supplement" at home. When I was growing up (and yes, I did walk several miles to school and back each day--but it wasn't uphill both ways) my mother made sure we did math and history studies at home, mostly through extra materials that she bought while sacrificing for herself. Things like a used but still relevant general encyclopedia, an encyclopedia of American history, and one on science and inventions.

Great article. My kids are now in first and third grade. I would say they have just enough homework. We'll see how it goes as they get older. They have a routine that we stick to~home, snack and homework. Then it's out of the way and they can enjoy their down time!

Regardless of how much or how little homework our schools suffer from so little money. Youth should be our biggest investment in America today.

I must admit: I am pretty sure I couldn't tell you all the capitals of all 50 states! I might be close, but I wouldn't not get them all... great article about the value of homework!

Great article. I was going to write an article on this subject. Now that I've read your article, there's no need to. My grandchildren have so much homework. Sometimes they are up late into the night. One of them has three honor classes, and his backpack was so heavy, we got him a roller. or whatever it is called. When he gets to high school, he may not want the roller. My 16 year old granddaughter need a roller. Her back pack is so heavy. She's in high school and refuses to use a roller.

When my daughter first entered the fourth grade she was given 4 hours a night of homework. She quickly changed teachers and things went smoothly from there. It was unreal! Great article!
