For years I have been addicted to Penguin Peppermints, a caffeinated mint that looks like a tiny penguin egg. When the store started raising the price every month or so I started shopping around for another mint. I like strong bold mints so Altoids was the next obvious choice but they are a bit too trendy for me. When everyone at the local Starbuck's feels the need to pull out their Altoid tin and pop one after a coffee, it's safe to say that it's lost its appeal in my eyes. And no, I'm not a huge fan of Starbucks either but do admit I am addicted to their Mocha Frappuccino.Of all places to discover my newest mint addiction, 7-11 was where my revelation took place. There was a huge rack of 'sale' items and on the fifty cent shelf there were literally hundreds of tiny metal tins of various colors. I grabbed one of each flavor, made my way to the register and saw the clerk smirking. "Better watch it, they are addictive". Like some snot nosed seventeen year old is going to dictate my life ...
I was eating crow about an hour later; I went back to the store with twenty dollars and bought forty more tins of the Ice and Strong versions. The Lemon ones weren't all that appealing to me so I skipped that flavor. As much as I hated to admit it, there was a good chance I was going to get hooked on these and wasn't taking any chance of running out any time soon.
One thing that I love about these is there is a small plastic cover inside the tin so when you open it, you don't have mints flying all over the place. There is a small cut out hole on the bottom left side that you shake the mints out of. The downside is you don't know how many mints you have left; you can pop the cover up to get a peek of you many are left but its not exactly an easy thing to do.
I have only seen these in three flavors: the black tin contains the Strong mints, silver has Ice and green contains Lemon. All three of these contain guarana but to be perfectly honest you are going to have to eat a ton of them to get any type of kick from them. As I said, the Lemon flavor (with green tea) was the only one that I didn't care for but I have a few friends that are equally addicted to them as I am to the Strong flavored ones.
