He's coming down the street with a sparkling earring in his ear, pretty white teeth, maybe a doorag under his sports cap, a fresh shirt maybe overlapping a wifebeater or t-shirt, his shoes are bright white and brand new, and his pants look like they're fresh out of a retail store. He's in popular hip hop gear and wears it proudly. Sometimes he may wear his jeans or khakis with a button-down shirt. He may not wear a cap; maybe his hair is freshly tapered with a Caesar haircut or dreadlocks falling on his shoulders. To me, he represents hip hop and the casual wear of someone who wants to express himself by wearing gear he's most comfortable in. I love hip hop and brothas who can wear hip hop gear neatly; this includes everything from Phat Farm to Ecko to Akademiks. But then he turns around and the outfit and style go down the drain. I look down to see this boy/man's pants hanging under or in the middle of his butt. He pulls his pants up repeatedly because they start to drift down as he walks, and he's perfected that slow dip walk so they don't fall down altogether. I can see the designs and name brand of his underwear and sometimes where the elastic on his boxers or boxer briefs are tucked over his shirt. Suddenly he's not so attractive to me and I walk away with a vicious eye roll.

Sagging pants was never meant to be fashionable. Prisoners wear their pants this low because belts are a popular way to commit suicide by hanging oneself, to hang others, or to use as a weapon in fights. Prisoners are also not allowed to have shoestrings for the same reasons. But there is an even more obvious reason why pants are sagging in prison. If the pants are below a man's bottom, it is to introduce to other men that he is homosexual. As Eazy E once said about women in skirts, "For easy access, baby."

First off, distributing condoms to prisoners would say that the facility condones the action. You can argue that it will go on regardless blah blah... Point being, it will only increase the sexual activity in the facility while not actually protecting those who do not consent to the sex. Is someone who wants to rape a person actually gonna care whether or not they are using protection?! Maybe in the real world, but not on the inside. Now... If a person is comfortable and not infringing upon your rights as a human being, why do you people feel it so necessary to impose your view of what is acceptable on others!? Isn't this the main reason people left Europe and came to America!?! Just because you all feel that this is obscene and vulgar, you must realize that maybe more that your own opinion matters on the subject. i feel that a female that is 250 lbs who wears shorts and a tank top is offensive. Why can't we impose a fine on these culprits?!

Brent, I agree. Rob, are you exaggerating when you say "all men"? I would think some would do some serious fighting to protect themselves from being violated like that. I wrote an article about whether condoms should be distributed in prison for that reason, plus the increasing risks of HIV/AIDS.

Makavelli, in order to hate, I have to be jealous. Trust me when I say I am not. As for talking about "better topics," this is what I don't understand. If you feel like there are better topics to talk about, WHY would you read this one? And then why would you tell me how much you spent on boxers like that's in any way relevant to the conversation? Whether they're $10 or $30, boxers are boxers. However, please feel free to click on my name. I have over 150 articles, but ironically, THIS article has more visits than any other, including the Jena 6 reports, Sean Bell, police brutality, and so forth. Before you talk about better topics that I could've talked about, make sure that you've actually checked to see if I did topics like that. As much as I don't like Bush though, I don't believe HE bombed the World Trade Center. America had been bullying other countries and getting bomb threats long before Bush's presidency.

I work in the criminal justice system and men (all men) turn gay quick in prison. Sagging pants is the quickest way to show the other arrestees that you are submissive and willing to play the female role. So when I see men outside prison sagging it is my impression that they are prosituting themselves. They may not admit it but ...

Some people sag their pants so low that I just feel like asking them " why the heck did you even put the pants on" People who sag their pants are really inconsiderate of other people. Just because they want to show off their underwear doesnt mean people want to see it

By the way, showing too much cleavage is actually showing a body part underneath the clothes, but men who are sagging aren't showing their butt cleavage, so I don't understand your example. A better example would be a woman wearing a see-through shirt so you can see her bra because that is also considered an undergarment. But showing too much cleavage wasn't a signal for homosexuality in prison, so once again, it's not the same thing. I'm not saying that men who sag are doing it to show homosexuality (nor am I homophobic) now, but I am saying that that's the original reason the style started--that and trying to discourage prisoners from suicide or assault. When I see a grown man sagging, it looks crazy to me. It just looks sloppy AND feminine at the same time, in my opinion.

Nicky, if you're going to call me a name, at least use it correctly. A hater is someone who is jealous or wants to be like another person. I don't envy someone for sagging their pants. Although I don't care for the style, "hate" is a strong word. I can't say I hate it; it's just not my flavor. As for folks saying a dress has too much cleavage, are you serious? "Living Single" used to constantly get on Regine for showing too much cleavage. Hell, even "Golden Girls" had episodes like that. Shows were banned for showing too much leg and thigh on TV. But if you want to use that example, brothas are forever looking at a woman's chest with or without the cleavage showing. When you see a man, are you gazing at his bunched-up boxer shorts? If so, then hell, do your thing. I don't find it sexy though.

Wearing low pants is cool, ur a hater. Its basically the same as wearing a dress with too much cleavage, and no one says anything about that.

Kandi, I came back to your message because I just saw Nelly's "Party People" video for the first time, and yes, I'll give him 100% sexy, 9 1/2 on a 10-point scale. However, from what I could see in the video, he was wearing clothes that fit him. I didn't see him in ridiculously baggy clothes. They were baggy but fitting. As for Lil' Wayne, that's all you. *thumbs up to you* but I do not find Lil' Wayne sexy at all. However, I do like the "Lollipop" song, specifically the part about getting a refund and bringing him back. Hilarious! But back to the subject at hand, click on my name. I talk about plenty of stuff. Feel free to check out the rest. If you feel like this subject was unimportant, what made you click on it in the first place?

And by the way, if you read that part correctly, you'll specifically see that I said "As Eazy E once said about women in skirts, "For easy access, baby." I stated he was talking about women in SKIRTS, not that he was homosexual. However, sagging pants in prison IS for easy access as well. I don't consider Eazy E a legend, but regardless, I didn't misquote him. I'd give the title of legend to folks like Afrika Bambataa, Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Kid Capri, and so forth. But I digress. Again, I talk about everything from Emmett Till, Jena 6, ex-convicts, top five colognes and so forth, but somehow this article got more visits than ALL of my other articles. If a person likes to sag, so be it. But I'm saying for me personally, I'm not dating a guy who sags his pants underneath his butt. It's about as unattractive as a dude in hot pink Speedos over fitted jeans, in my not-so-humble opinion.

i dont see why it matters to any other person what someone wheres how is someone who sags infringing upon your rights as an american? who are we to regulate what someone wears n how they wear it? when Eazy E said saggin was 4 easy access im so sure it wasnt meant in a homosexual way n 4 u to say it like that it was a slap in the face 2 a hip hop legend. some people say it started in prison some say it was gang related non the less it still should not be a major topic of discussion when the world has more extreme things or problems we should be talking about on ways 2 fix. sagging in some cases is sexy it looks alot better than the emo look, Nelly and Wayne both sag and are both equally sexy, and also are not fakers.the lames that sag dont look so sexy bcuz the swag is totally no the same.

Non-ya, wow, talk about strong opinions. :-) While I don't think all men who sag are gay, undercover men lovers, I have zero problems with someone who is homosexual. I don't think they necessarily look gay when sagging (although the tanktops cupped under the butt looks like a spandex dress), it's just sloppy. Plus, whenever I ask someone why they sag, I get the same answer: "It's the style." Dressing from fads is something I expect from someone in elementary school and high school, but by college-age, I would hope guys would stop paying attention to fashion magazines to decide on their outfits.

Shamontiel & Mr. 25 grown Man your SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! correct! From a 36 year old women, I hate it. I think all saggers are guy, undercover men lovers. Even when I was younger I never gave that type a chance because I wanted someone who didn't choose to look like every other dude you see. I man should have enough since to be his own man and shouldn't have to do what everone els does. I hope they don't start wearing dress, even thou I think they already acting like a !*&%#!!! I don't mean this toward the man who perfer loose jeans but If I can see your underwear it's simply too much. Just like women with the above the but tatoos a.k.a. the tramp stamp. Don't be a copy cat, set your own trend and style, okay!

Posted on 04/11/2008 at 8:04:20 PM

Shamontiel, you are correct, the trend does give the appearance that they don't care about their appearance. I'm working on something for the future that will deal a bit more with the issue, an inside view from some of the perpetrators and what the who appeal is.
