On May 24th, 2007 Chief Medical Examiner Charles Hirsch, finally conceded that it was likely that Felicia Dunn-Jones, a City Attorney, died from complications arising from her exposure to World Trade Center Dust. Felicia's Autopsy report listed her cause of death as sarcoidosis, which is an inflammation of tissue that begins in the lungs but can spread to vital organs. The symptoms started with a cough that developed a few months after the attack. She eventually became weak and the cough got worse. On February 10, 2002, she stopped breathing and passed away.

On May 24, I was watching the news on TV when I saw her picture pop up on screen. I almost went into shock. I knew Felicia-Dunn Jones. From 1990 to 1993, I had worked at the New York City Law Department as a proofreader, where she also worked and I used to proofread her legal documents all the time. I remember her as a nice friendly woman, who never passed on the pressures of her job to the word processing and proofreading staff. I had not been aware of her death until now. I was shocked that she had died. A day later, I am not only shocked, but I am also scared because I too, was exposed to that dust.

On 9/11, I was no longer working at the Law Department located one block away from the World Trade at 100 Church Street. I was working in One World Financial Center, which was right across the street from the World Trade Center. That day, I arrived to work late and got off the train right after the second plane had already crashed into the South Tower. The streets were filled with workers and tourists, who were all gaping at the huge burning holes in the two towers. I spotted one of my coworkers and we both wondered whether we should go on to work. We were standing on Liberty and Broadway, a block away from Church Street, where the towers stood. We had just begun to walk down Liberty towards Church when a police officer made everyone go back to Broadway. I have often wondered if that police officer survived. He probably had not because the buildings fell about 15 minutes later.

As I was watching the news, my kids were with me and I was talking to myself, saying things like, "OMG, I didn't know she had died. She died from just being exposed?" My 9 year old did say, "Mom, you're scaring me." I had to reassure her that I felt fine and that Felicia Dunn Jones had exhibited symptoms soon after she was exposed.

Last week, as I was driving my 11 year old daughter to school, she picked up my newspaper that was in the back seat and started reading the article on the late Felicia Dunn-Jones (May she rest in peace!). She must have processed the information so well that she chose to write a report on health issues that was due for her science class. She made no comment to me until a couple of days later she asked me:" Dad, do you think that one day you might come down with some respiratory problems that might, you know...Well, I don't want to say it? She continued, "although I asked you, but I am afraid of hearing your answer. I read about what happened to that lady who breathed in the dust of 9/11, how sad and I would not want to loose you that way" Well, it so happened that I have been working in lower Manhattan since 1982 and I too, was caught in the brouhaha of September 11th, 2001. I usually visit the vegetable marketplace at the foot of the towers to buy mostly fresh corns to carry back to t

You're right. I don't really trust the "experts" when it comes to determining air safety levels at all. I expected those exposed for days to have health problems but I didn't know it was possible to die from just being exposed on that day. Scary stuff. There probably is a lot of pressure on the City medical staff not to encourage a link between 9/11 and ensuing lung problems because of fear of medical and insurance claims.

Three days before 911 my hubby got injured on the job-so he was not able to work on that tragic day(he is retired now due to tht injury). But his former partner and other pals from the NYC Sheriff Dept and police dept worked double shifts down at the site after the towers fell for many days. So many of his pals are having problems now BUT city officials are looking into their "lifestyles" as a reason for their breathing problems. His ex partner was told his new found asthma was because there is a bus stop in front of his house!!! another one of his friends is married to a smoker- sooooo. With all the materials and chemicals involved I do not see how it was determined it was safe to breathe the air down there.
