"Do you have any Happy Hour drink specials?" I once asked one afternoon at Boston Beerworks, near Fenway Park in Boston."No, and Happy Hour drink specials are illegal in Boston," the waitress replied.
I was surprised, because for the last year or so I'd been going to Roggie's New Age Bar and Grill, where you can get $1 drafts every day between 4 and 7. So I decided to investigate, and asked at some other area bars if they had any afternoon or early evening specials--they all said no.
As far as I know, Roggie's New Age Bar and Grille has the cheapest beer and Boston.
Of course, it's not great beer. It's light a beer, either Bud Light or Busch Light. A friend once had a Corona after happy hour and remarked that it tasted "really dark." But they serve it in full-size American Pint glasses and if you, like me, are a student who is more interested in saving money than drinking fancy beer, it's a great deal.
Besides the $1 drafts, you can also get Buffalo Wings at 25 cents a piece. They come in hot, mild, barbeque, and honey mustard flavors and all are served with blue cheese, as well as a few carrots and celery if you need something to feel a little healthier. Consider: 3 beers and 12 wings would cost you $6.
Service can be slow, since waitresses and waiters know they won't be making huge tips. You can remedy this by being generous, and since the bill will almost certainly be cheap, leaving a slightly larger tip than normal isn't a bad idea. Roggie's also serves a variety of pub-grub fare--if you don't mind spending a few more dollars. Usually tables ordering full-priced food or drinks will get more attention than those cherry-picking the happy hour specials.
Roggie's can get really busy on Fridays and Saturdays. They have a basement bar in addition to the normal restaurant space, and sometimes there is standing room only even down there. Upstairs they have a trivia game you can play against other tables, as well as the classic "Golden Tee" and a few other arcade-type games.
