Grey's Viewers might not want "McDreamy" Dr. Patrick Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) to end up TV's next Ross and Rachel (Friends) or Luke and Lorelai (Gilmore Girls).

After scouring various message boards the main pet peeve viewers have with the show is the relationship between Grey and Shepherd. One viewer says that it reminds of her of Dawson's Creek where the couple is splitting from one another for no apparent reason other than to complicate their lives. "The characters are striving to be unhappy," posts another Grey's viewer.

While the show does seem a lot like a soap opera (essentially that's what it is) I think that Shonda Rhimes should be careful intertwining the plot into something that never plays out. LOST really struggled for a bit during season three when they kept opening up new doors without closing ANY.

Ross and Rachel drug out for upteen seasons, and if Meredith and Shepherd's romance does the same it may keep some viewers locked in to see what will happen next. I feel that many other viewers will see it as a 'been there, done that' type scenario and get bored with that whole story line.

There is some speculation that the show will try to sell the Lexie (Meredith's sister introduced at the end of the season) with McDreamy. If this occurs some viewers are saying that's fine with them because she's together enough to handle McDreamy while Meredith is a mess.

Most of the negative comments are coming from women who seem angry with Meredith for not taking Dr. Shepherd after he proclaims that she is the 'love of his life.' There are a number of aspects to love and relationships in real life and thus TV life should not be much different, but I'm not certain that Meredith saying no to McDreamy really makes sense to many viewers in the context in which it was done.

Takeaways
  • Are Meredith and McDreamy like Ross and Rachel ?
  • Is Rhimes going to entice more viewers with more relationship drama?
  • OR beat a dead horse into the ground for the remaining show's seasons?

I love GA, but am bored, bored, bored with the whole Meredith/McSteamy thing ... they'd better get a new love duo soon, or I'm givin' up on them and headin' over to watch Addison Grey's new show "Private Practice"!! Now that's a good show!

Grey's Anatomy is one of the few shows I follow. Ironically (or perhaps not) I was also a fan of Friends. I didn't find the on again, off again relationship of Ross and Rachel to be annoying. But there is something about Derek and Meredith's strife that bugs me. It's manipulative. Derek is a bit of a jerk, and is very unreasonable. Finn wasn't much better. The trouble is, I can see the strings on the marionette, and I don't like it.

I thought exactly the same thing. My mom and I both love this show but she is starting to get tired of it (the on again off again thing). I tried to explain to her that it's just like friends. The ratings mandate the script. And they should be together long enough so that we know we love them together, but not long enough that we get bored. In the end, though I'm sure (like Ross and Rachel) they will pull it together and be together. Great article!!

I haven't gotten into Grey's (*gasp* shocker, I know), but as television vewiers, we really prefer friction vs. happily ever after.

Wes said it. It could also be "it worked for 'Friends', let's do it". Soap Operas have lasted for years, despite the same ole same ole. It would be interesting to know the psyche of people that make such stuff entertaining to many.

I think they just need to have more sex. I think Izzy and Denny were the best couple on the show, and then they go and kill Denny off.

I've never seen the show. Maybe I'll check out next season, now that you've introduced me to the characters.

I've only seen the first season of Grey's Anatomy..recently...was very good stuff..I see like most tv shows they'll run out of things to write pretty quick and just start rehashing old plot lines

I am bored with their relationship. I really wanted them together at first, so it's been disappointing to say the least.
