As many Batman Begins fans know, the sequel will be out summer of 2008. It will be entitled, The Dark Knight, which is the first live-action Batman film that does not include the word "Batman." On wikipedia, Chris Nolan (the director of both films) has stated that he is creating a very different Batman than any other series and everything else always had Batman in it. He's going a different a direction and it's safe to say I am okay with that. Nolan has given Batman fans something to be excited about after Batman Begins.

Over the past month, there has been a lot of buzz about the Joker's "make-up" and comparing it to Jack Nicholson's version. My personal opinion? There's no way anyone can compare the two villains because they were in two different types of film. Yes, they are both Batman films and yes, the Joker has always been portrayed as a crazy man with clown face paint on. But -- what many people don't know is that Nolan's inspiration for The Joker comes from his first two appearances in the Batman comics and also from Alan Moore's comic, Batman: The Killing Joke. Batman isn't Spider-Man or Super-Man. This is a dark movie and it is going to have dark villains. If you want bubble gum villains -- this is not the movie for you.

Now, the good stuff -- the strategy in getting the buzz out about this movie was done through a website. If you visit www.ibelieveinharveydent.com you will find a campaign poster of Harvey Dent (who is played by Aaron Eckhart -- which is going to be awesome, by the way) standing in front of an American Flag. It's straight forward, nothing happens, that's it. But, if you were one of the few who heard about www.ibelieveinharveydenttoo.com earlier in the month, you would have seen the same poster of Dent but with graffiti on his eyes and mouth. The screen fades to a menacing photo of Heath Ledger as The Joker. That picture freaked me out!

But don't get excited to check the website out yet! After a few hours, they took that website down and replaced it with a "Page Not Found" error. Do not fret. Highlight the entire page...I'll even give you a few seconds to do it and come back to this article...................................

This is the latest image of what The Dark Knight's version of The Joker will look like. He is going to be played by Heath Ledger.

Takeaways
  • The Joker will be played by Heath Ledger and have a more dark and sinister side.
  • Maggie Gyllenhaal will replace Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes.
  • The U.S. release date for The Dark Knight is July 18, 2008.
Did You Know?
Many people feel the scary face of Heath Ledger's "Joker" is too menacing -- but this version stays true to the Joker's dark and evil character portrayed in his first two appearances in Batman comics and Alan Moore's, "Batman: The Killing Joke."

I'm so happy they are finally doing these Batman films the right way. No longer are they campy and, well, just plain old bad. They are dark movies and the filmmakers found the perfect Batman in Christian Bale. I can't wait to see what they come up with for The Dark Knight. Heath Ledger as a dark Joker character should be great.

Really looking forard to this. Good read! I'm also glad Holmes is out. She was in over her head in the last film.

Great info! No Kate Holmes? Is she locked up in Tom Cruise' basement? Batman has always been more appealing (to me) than Spiderman. Seems like they finally got the character right!
