Marketing is a huge part of our society this day and age. Every company has a marketing division, and spends grand amounts of money each year to advertise their products or services. Beer companies are no different. They spend millions of dollars each year on concert advertising, sponsoring sporting events, buying radio and television time for commercials and other major expenses to get their point across that they are the best product.

They also spend a lot of money nationally on advertising in particular cities as well; printing banners, making signs, hanging lights and sending out a crew of girls to be walking advertisements for their company. Most people have seen these girls at some point in a bar, club, restaurant or sporting event; they are called Miller Girls, (or any other company).

I have had the pleasure of being a Miller Lite Girl for several years now, and while it is a very exciting and rewarding job, most girls find themselves wondering if it is worth it. In Alabama, where I have worked, we are lucky enough to choose our own outfits and basically run the promotions ourselves, but most girls don't have that kind of luck. Many people see us out, but don't realize what exactly our point in being there is, especially after having a few drinks.

The biggest misinterpretation is that we are there to entertain the crowd. The girls are not entertainers, they are doing a job in which they are getting paid for, which is to promote a particular product. They are there to speak to and look at, not be harassed or touched. A lot of people, we have found, want to have a picture taken with the girls, which is fine. After the alcohol kicks in, however, they want more than a picture.

it really bothers me...these people that say we are trying to sell more than just beer. they have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. we work our asses off to get ready for a promotion. not just by our physical appearance, but also by getting things together for the actual theme of the promotion, making sure we have enough of whatever it is we are using before we go into an establishment, and going over and over information about our beer so that we ourselve are better informed when we have to talk to people about why our beer is better. it's not our fault that people would much rather talk to an attractive female about why they should switch beers, than if we were just ordinary.

My girlfriend wants to be a Miller Girl and I kinda have a problem with it! I told her that Miller was using her sex appeal to sell a their beer- and she was like" no their not, it's a Job! blah blah blah- I just don't like the idea of my girl using her "assets" to sell beer.

Miller lite guys don't take the job serious enough and hit on consumers that is why MN doesn't have them. and Miller girls should be sexy so we can stand out in a crowd to get our product noticed. anyone who thinks the idea of being sexy is bad must be fat, ugly, or insecure. all the secure woman like us, obviosly people like it, you have to like it to do it for a job and there are tons of us.

Harassing women should never be allowed, end of story. But I do agree with Kaitlin Coffey that these women are selling more than just beer. They may not be selling sex itself, but they are selling the IDEA of sex to push a brand beer. If this wasn't the case then there would be no need to dress provocatively in order to garner attention. Sex sells and Miller Lite knows it, as should the women working for Miller.

Personally I think that the beer girls are selling a lot more than the beer. I personally hate seeing them in the clubs because they are selling the idea of sex and that bothers me.

Good article!

I have to agree with Michelle S. It's not just promotion. It's an image. "If you drink Miller Lite, you can have a girl just like me!!!" In the sex industry the rules are laid out and the women all know perfectly well that they're selling their sexuality, no matter what level of the industry they're in. That is perfectly acceptable if they choose to do it. Miller Lite is not selling Miller Lite, they're selling low-cut shirts and short skirts to get drooling drunk men to buy their cheap, weak beer. Work at Hooters where the expectations are honest. Work at Playboy where sex and hot bodies are the MO and THAT'S what they're selling. Don't work for a beer company that's just "promoting" their beer and really selling the image of their half-naked Miller Lite Girls. Because Michelle is right. Where are the Miller Lite Guys?

Why not in all locations? In part because bars are where people hook up, and the more a man has to drink, the more he thinks he's Superman. Sorry guys, you tend to look more like Stupidman to us when you drink too much.

Great article! Think about it, women as well as men wear very little on beaches. We accept that we cannot harass, or be rude to people on the beach. So why don't we understand it, in ALL locations??

So are the Miller-Lite girls thinner than the others? Just kidding. Interesting article.

I would like to make a distinction. Promo girls are not selling sex, although the patrons often try to buy it. Similarly, topless dancers do not sell sex. What they sell is a fantasy and that means 'hands off'! You can go home and have pleasant dreams if you want, but you do not handle the merchandise. When patrons try to force a reality, the bubble bursts and trouble begins. Men often think that because a woman is attractive, she does not deserve to be treated with respect. That is tantamount with 'she asked for it,' which is the oldest excuse for sexual assault. Ass-grabbing, gentlemen, is a (mild) form of sexual assault.

Nice article. I agree with some posters that you should be expected to be hit on in that type of work situation however, individuals that take it a step further to harassment should be removed. Dressing in clothes that are a bit tight to promote a product should not give people the idea that they can act however they want toward you.

This of course is not an old idea, but if it is true that Miller Girls are only present to promote a product and not to entertain the crowd as you say, why are there no Miller Guys? I must admit I'm not an expert on Miller promotions - are there any men who promote beer? I doubt it. Why? Because Miller knows that men buy the majority of beer, and men like hot girls in short skirts. Of course there is no justification for harassment, but there is more to the Miller Girl than simple product promotion.

I'm in NY and I've seen miller lite girls. From what i've seen they get the bartender to fill up glasses of miller lite and walk around the bar with glasses in hand asking patrons if they want a free beer. They also wear skimpy outfits short blue dress, boobs staring you in the eye, that doesn't mean they should be harrassed.

Again, as another promo girl who's done almost every kind of promo except alcohol (more the hours than anything else). This is a good rule of thumb for any kind of promo girl. It's one thing to get hit on, it's another entirely to have someone who won't leave you alone, and is trying to play grab ass. I did a promo 2 wks ago where I gave out really nice goodie bags at Walmart. I had women almost fight over the things. 0.0 I think people need to remember to act like people, and to treat others like people.
