Many people feel they can do little to affect change in the world. It does seem at times that the world is controlled by corrupt politicians and greedy corporate executives. How can the ordinary citizen hope to affect change in education, health care, the environment, and other important issues? In fact, it is the ordinary citizens who make some of the most tremendous impacts on their communities locally, regionally, and globally.

Are you interested in protecting and preserving the environment? Recycle or reuse your sour cream tubs, egg cartons, Christmas boxes, and aluminum cans. Most areas offer curbside recycling for many types of plastic, paper, and metal. Use "green" cleaning products that minimize water and air pollution. Cultivate a garden in that little used space on the side of your house. Install energy saving devices in your home, such as water heaters and compact fluorescent light bulbs. With the money you save, consider paying a little extra to your power company to use wind or geothermal energy.

Tired of ever-increasing gas prices? Try biking to work or using public transportation. If leaving your car at home is not feasible, check if there are any co-workers who would be willing to carpool. Also, by changing the oil in your car at recommended intervals and keeping it well-maintained, you can prevent serious problems as well as ensure that your car runs as efficiently as possible.

Takeaways
  • It is ordinary citizens who make some of the most tremendous impacts on their communities
  • Some cities provide matching grants for community improvement projects
  • Another life-saving gesture that only takes about an hour every two months is donating blood
