On May 28, the "Creation Museum" in Petersburg, Kentucky, is scheduled to open. This $27 million project, built by an organization of the religious right called "Answers in Genesis," is dedicated to "proving" the fairytale that the Earth - and the Universe - is only 6000 years old. This is just the latest in a string of attempts to make fundamentalist Christianity the official religion of the United States, going against the principles of our constitution, not to mention the truth.

But when has science mattered to people like those in Answers in Genesis? They claim to have the only version of truth; they apparently have a direct line to God so that they can be absolutely certain that their interpretation of the bible is the only correct one. Any group, Christian, Muslim, or otherwise, who claims to have a monopoly on God and truth scares me. There are many interpretations of the bible, and I wouldn't presume to tell anyone that their religious beliefs are wrong - unless they are using those beliefs as a weapon, or claiming them as science.

Dr. Lawrence Krauss, a professor of physics with a Ph.D. that didn't come from the back of a magazine has written a guide for parents to use to help explain to their children that this Creation Museum is very, very wrong. (Please note that I am not saying that God had nothing to do with the creation of the Universe; but that is a matter of faith, NOT science or fact. Faith requires no proof, and it is unable to produce any.) He provides the a list of the Top 10 reasons, in easily understood language, that show that the earth is in fact much, much older than 6000 years (visit www.defconamerica.org for the full text).

Takeaways
  • The Nobel Prize for physics in 2006 was given for proof of the Big Bang.
  • Our sun is 4.55 billion years old.
  • "Intelligent Design" is not science, it is faith.
Did You Know?
The time it takes for galaxies to collide is over 200 million years. Our galaxy is between 11 and 14 billion years old.

I read about this somewhere.

Very well stated, matie! I wish there are many many more like you who can distinguish faith from human agenda. Sometimes I get the feeling that what's being worshiped in churches today isn't god, but a manmade book that people have mistaken to be god. If there is a god, it surely doesn't need a middle man to communicate with anyone. Anyhow.. thanks for another very enlightening read! Cheers. :o)

I agree with you %100. I never understood why it had to be either or. I believe that Something much greater than us had to create everything and it is really stupid to believe that the earth is only 6000 years old. How can fundamentalists, explain the remains of humans and fossils and scientific fact just to fit into their narrow views? and adam and eve? Give me a break if anyone sees that as real and not symbolic, well, I really would have to question a God that operates that way. But once again what do I know? Great article.

The thing that kills me about Christians who make evolution/creation into an either/or thing is that they apparently believe God is capable of anything...except creating the universe through the process of evolution.

On the contrary, Charlotte, this kind of thought is not how we grow and learn...this is exactly the same kind of thought that would have burned evolution scientists at the stake. Giving abject ignorance an equal place at the table only serves to make the entire table ignorant. I saw one interview where the founder of "answers" was explaining how all the animals (inlcuding dinosaurs) used to live peacefully together..it was funny trying to watch that jackass try to explain the teeth of a T-Rex..

I'm always open to a different point of view. It's how we grow and learn.

Steve, I really hope - and believe, too - that it isn't MOST Americans. Just a very loud and agressive minority. (And despite their "strong faith" in what they believe, why do they get so defensive when anyone seems to attack them - by disagreeing with them, for example???)

I guess they don't like the Geico ad that "it's so simple even a caveman can to it" since cavemen preceeded 6,000 years ago. The scary part it that most Americans truely believe in this.

Thank you Andrea. You are right, but science and faith can go hand in hand. They do for me; I happen to believe that scientists used their God-given curiosity and intelligence to understand, in our modern world, how the world began - and that what they found is just how God did it. Remember the cultural context in which Genesis was written; people then wouldn't have understood evolution, or the concept of light-years, fossils, and radio-active isotopes, or background cosmic radiation! Heck, I barely understand it! But for me, it's all part of His plan. (Now the scientists will hate me...)

Creation is a touchy topic because it pitts faith and science against one another. I think you addressed it very well.

I agree, Alban. But some groups would very much like their version to be the only version of a Higher Power and creation, and that, in my reading of the constitution, is not what our founding fathers intended, or a system I would like to live under. Just one woman's opinion.

Thank You fer your informed opinions. Since the constitution allows us to believe as we choose each of us need make our own decisions on creation and a Higher Power.
