One of the great things about living in another country, especially a country that is a member of the European Union, is being able to get citizenship in that country. If you are moving from the United States to Greece, then there is a fairly decent possibility that you are interested in obtaining Greek citizenship, especially if you are planning on making Greece your home on a more permanent basis. As is the case with any other country, there are requirements which must be met before you can qualify and apply for citizenship in Greece. It is important to know what the specific details are from the beginning of your arrival in Greece so that you can make sure that you are following everything the way you should be. This way, there will not be any surprises down the line when you are ready to make your application for Greek citizenship. Often times, you are required to have been in the country for a certain period prior to applying for citizenship. It would be quite frustrating to not know the specifics and have taken an extended vacation outside of Greece that prevents you from qualifying for Greek citizenship.
As a foreigner wishing to obtain citizenship in the country of Greece by means of naturalization, you will first need to be at least 18 years of age by the time that you make your application for citizenship. Also, you must have made your primary residence within the borders of Greece for a period of 10 years in the last 12 years before your application is submitted. You will also have to be able to show that you are fluent in the official language, which is Greek. And you will have to demonstrate that you have sufficient knowledge of Greek history and the Greek civilization. As is the case in most other European countries, you will need to have copies of all of the required documents in a translated form. You will need to remember to have the original copies of your birth certificate, proof of residency, proof of employment, proof of financial means, and anything else that is requested. The requirements change often, so make sure you check before you submit your application to avoid any delays.
