Door County, Wisconsin is a peninsula on the east shore of Lake Michigan, of the Great Lakes. Midwest Living Magazine recently named it the Best Small Town Getaway in the Midwest.

Door County is, in fact, a great getaway destination. The county has about 300 miles of lake front, and is easy to get around in. Door County is a morning or afternoon's drive from Milwaukee and Chicago The lighthouses dot the shore line. There are parks with trails for walking, biking and enjoying the forested area.

There are plenty of unspoiled areas in Door County, with coastline, forests and wildflowers. Visitors find gracious accommodations, friendly shopkeepers, great food in the restaurants. Browsing in the unique shops is a favorite past time for visitors around in, or visitors can find a place to gaze at the lake. Door County has harbors, ships, fishing boats and more. There are several wineries in Door Country, with wine tasting offered. The cherry trees produce sweet cherries that produce wine, jellies, dried cherries and other tasty treats.

The summer months are filled with culture; entertainment, art shows , festivals, plays and music are in abundance.

The American Folklore Theater performs on a outdoor stage at Peninsula State Park. The summer main stage season features three to four shows in repertory. The state of the art sound system enhances the performances. American Folklore Theatre, 920-854-6117.

The peninsula has several small towns, each with it's own charm. The towns of Door County include Bailey's Harbor, Carlsville, Egg Harbor, Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay, Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay. The towns were settled by German and Scandinavian immigrants and the towns of the peninsula reflect the Scandinavian cultures of the Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, German and Belgian immigrants.
