Many freelance writers state that finding the time to do their work can be one of their hardest tasks. Many of them have other jobs or hobbies to consider. As a parent who is writing freelance articles your time is even more precious, use it wisely. Parents know how important it is to use their time effective when they have young children at home in general. It becomes more important though if you are a parent who has children at home and you are also trying to earn money as a freelance writer from home. You have to learn how to arrange your time between your children, spouse, freelance work, and possible a full time job as well. All of these needs for your time can create their own level of stress. If you don't manage your writing time effectively, your freelance work will suffer greatly. If your work suffers, so will the income it generates. There are ways to lower this risk though.

As a freelance writer, time is your most precious resource. It might be worth it to you to take a time management course to learn how to effectively manage your time. These courses can be found being sponsored by many business organizations and quite often by local universities and community colleges. There are many time management skills these courses will teach you. Some basic tips including creating a written schedule. Remember just because you are a freelancer, it doesn't mean you don't have to work to a schedule. Sometimes this can help you, especially when you have a lot of other demands on your time. This doesn't mean just scheduling your work time, but also your family and social time. Another skill many time management courses will teach you is to discover the type of person you are. Some people do their work better at different times of the day, and in different settings. It is important to know your work style. These are just a few items you will learn in a time management class, in the end though there is much more you will learn and attending a class will bring a lot of value for your money you spend on the course.

Takeaways
  • A time management course can be found at many local colleges for a reasonable cost.
  • Create a working area in your home, where you can shut out the outside distractions.
  • Make sure your work is completely researched before the writing begins.
Did You Know?
Time management can be a rough skill to master. It's even harder when you have children. If your spouse and/or children work with you and understand though it becomes much easier.

Since I have taken on the demanding and rewarding art of freelance writing, I have stumbled upon a few obstacles, mainly children and husband. They all want my individual attention. Thanks for the helpful advice.

Great article and very useful for me. I have a problem with watching the kids have fun and trying to stay focused on my writing , when all I want to do is join in with the kids.

Great advice I can really use (as my five kids and dog run around me, and my husband glares because I am, once again, on the computer). :)
