When my kids were small, they absolutely loved that there were two amusement parks close to our home. They knew that at least a couple of times during the summer they could convince us to take them to both parks. Little did they know that my husband and I were just as anxious to go as they were.

Although Busch Gardens Williamsburg was considerably closer to our home than Kings Dominion, the children actually preferred the latter. In those days Busch was still in its early stages and didn't have as many attractions as Kings Dominion. It seems that it still the case. As Busch grows, so does it rival.

Kings Dominion is located right off Exit 98 on Interstate 95, 20 miles north of Richmond, VA and 75 miles south of Washington, DC., making it ideally located for most of the state. There are several places to obtain lodging nearby.

Kings Dominion Campground, located at 10061 Kings Dominion Blvd. in Doswell, Virginia features a swimming pool, playground, and volleyball court, as well as its own laundry facilities. Campers can choose to rent a cabin, opt for more primitive tent sites, or occupy an RV site with water, electric, and sewer hookup. The campground offers a miniature golf course for entertainment, at an additional fee. A free shuttle runs throughout the day between the park and campground.

Also close by is Kings Dominion Best Western King's Quarters at 16102 Theme Park Way in Doswell, Virginia. The motel is AAA approved and offers single and family rates. Amenities include HBO, CNN, ESPN, and Nickelodeon, a large swimming pool and volleyball court, a video game arcade, and a restaurant and lounge open 24 hours a day. Hair dryers, irons, ironing boards, coffee makers, televisions, and data port with free high speed internet is available in most rooms. The motel offers free shuttle service to and from Kings Dominion.

Now you're up in my neck of the woods! Every year our youth group makes at least one trip to King's Dominion. They just love it. It sure has changed since they opened!

I was there for the unveiling of Hypersonic XLC. Waited in that line for 8 hours, I kid you not. But as it got closer to closing time, we were able to get back on multiple times rapidly. Oh man is that thing a rush. I don't much care for KD, but that one coaster is worth the trip.
