If NBC's surprising television phenomenon, "Heroes," has showed us anything in its first season, it is the power of sacrifice. Throughout the series, characters have constantly laid their own lives on the line for the sake of others. Some have lived to see another day despite their sacrifices; others have paid the ultimate price of their lives for it. In this article, we will look at the five greatest sacrifices in this season of "Heroes."

Throughout the season, we have witnessed the struggle of the Sanders-Hawkins family as they have wrestled with the strangle hold Linderman had on their family. In the season finale, the two heads of household-well, make that three-finally take Linderman on when he abducts their son to meet his personal needs. In their final standoff, both Jessica and D.L. take a fall to help Niki save their family. Jessica, who has to this point refused to submit to Niki's loving heart, gives up the control when Linderman offers her millions of dollars to kill D.L. It seems she has finally come to an understanding of Niki's personal strength, encouraging her in a later scene when Niki finally has to handle the situation with Candice on her own to save their son. Earlier, D.L. makes a great sacrifice by stepping in front of Niki when Linderman goes to shoot her and not allowing the bullet to phase through his body. The sacrifice of both D.L. and Jessica in this final battle with Linderman earns them both a spot on this list.
