Christopher B. Speight, 39, has turned himself in for the shootings in Appomattox, Virginia that killed 8 people according to the Washington Post. Three of those killed were found inside a residence and four people
killed were found outside. Another victim was found out in the mid area of Route 703.

The shootings occurred close to Route 703 on Snapps Mill Road. The victims in this shooting are both male and female; those murdered include 3 teens and a 4-year old according to CNN.

Christopher Speight has some kind of relationship with the victims. The violence may have occurred due to an argument amongst family members. The police have not released specific information yet pending notification of the families of the victims.

The shooter also fired shots at a police helicopter. The shots caused a fuel leak in the chopper. The helicopter had to make an emergency landing.

The gunman is believed to have been hiding in the woods. Massive amounts of law enforcement had encircled the wooded area while searching for him.

Early Wednesday, four public schools and the Cornerstone Christian Academy were kept closed to ensure safety in the area where the shooter was still on the loose. Residents in areas near the shootings were also urged to stay inside their locked houses. Some residences were also evacuated due to the shootings.

The NY Times notes that Appomattox, Virginia is "best known as the place where Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to end the civil war."

State police spokesperson Corinne Geller told the Washington Post that the motive for the shootings is still unknown.

Virginia is known to have quite lax gun laws. Despite the murders at Virginia Tech, the gun laws in the state are still some of the most lenient in the nation.

Yep blame it on the gun laws. Maybe if some of his victims had been armed then it would have turned out differently.
Drugs and alcohol are not the cause of DV or murder, though many abusers use these substances to drown out their conscious and depression. Dry drunks and men who have stopped doing drugs who are domestic violence abusers kill all the time. They kill because it is all about control and what they want - the wife and children must love him or die. These people don't care about the value of a human life, they only care about what they want right now in the moment. And they are unfortunately almost impossible to rehabilitate. Instead, most are serial DV abusers. And they show little true remorse. If you listen to them talk, they will say "well the wife/child talked back, they disagreed with me, they deserve to be punched, but I did not intend to kill her or him." No true remorse or repentance. God bless.
Domestic violence victims are most likely to be killed while planning to leave, while trying to leave, or after leaving. With that said, until laws stop requiring people to hand children over to abusers for joint custody arrangements or require mothers to drop off their babies at a specified location to the abusive parents for supervised visits., we shall continue to see women and children be killed. Drop offs force women to be sitting ducks for violence and so do joint custody agreements. Write in to www.whitehouse.gov/contact to request a National DV Abuser Registry. This will help prevent more DV cases. God Bless.
We visited the historical features in Appomattox some years back. It seemed such a quiet little town, but if I remember quite a dpressed area nearby. These are always such sad, desperate acts.
I live only about a half-hour away from there. You have to wonder if drugs aren't involved. There seems to be "a lid on it" at the present.
Another sad case.
Abuse is a 'generationally-transmitted' disease. You get it from your parents. For some, abuse is a life sentence. The worst perpetrators are brain damaged from early childhood events. Drugs, surgery, therapy don't help them. They have an organic incapacity to feel empathy and compassion. They have to abuse, like they have to breathe. And it takes more abuse to gratify them as times goes by. The public and the judges need to get this. Discernment and identification are the only protections. I know. www.relationshipredflags.com
Julia, great report, another nut with a gun!
The last statement of this artcle opines that Virginia's gun laws are "lax" and goes on to mention the horrible crime Virginia Tech. Aside from the fact that the writer does not know how the person involved in THIS crime obtained the gun( legally or illegally) She should atleast be well versed enough to know that the very possesion of the handgun used to perpatrate the horrible crimes at VT by the VT shooter was ALREADY illegal. This person had a documented mental history that authorities and medical professional were obligated to report and did not. If they had followed the law, the person would not have been allowed to legally purchase the weapon. Last I checked Killing somone is Already illegal. Gun laws are only followed by law abiding citizens who are forced to run the risk of being victims. Criminals do not follow gun laws. Gun laws work about as well as drug laws....Gun laws only succedd in ensuring that criminals can assault you without fear of your being able to defend y
There are always three sides to every story. But the ending is still the same, they are dead and they shouldn't be.
