After months of blazing the charts with her popular rap song "Lip Gloss," Lil Mama gets served...or shall we say gets "laced."

Yes folks, in the tradition of UTFO, Kangol and Roxanne Shante, there is a full out battle going on via Youtube, between unsigned artist Eric Crawley and Jive Record's Lil Mama.

Whatcha' Know 'Bout Me?

The barely 20 something year olds Eric Crawley and Lil Mama (Niatia Kirkland) are taking it to the streets in classic rap battle style. Both artists are passionate about dance, songwriting and music and are using their skills to catapult their careers to the next level. Lil Mama hails from Brooklyn, New York saying "my father really helped me develop as an artist." Eric hails from Pennsylvania via Dallas, Texas and says that he has been "inspired by artists like Beyonce, Brandy, R-Kelly, Michael Jackson, Usher and Stevie Wonder. "

The difference between these two artists is that one, Lil Mama has become somewhat of a national phenomenon enjoying placement on BET, MTV and being signed to Jive Records. Eric Crawley on the other hand, is an unsigned artist who is making his way to the top while finding common ground with Lil Mama through the song "Lip Gloss," MY SPACE & You Tube.

With the success of Lil Mama, Eric Crawley has taken to the "tubes" and created his revenge ala Roxanne with "My Laces," which is his answer/response to Lil Mama...proclaiming "I gotcha girl now, now you lookin' like a fool!"

I Be Lovin' It !

I've listened to the songs and checked out both videos and think they're poppin.' Whatcha think?

Lil Mama ----- My Lip Gloss

Eric Crawley ----- My Laces ( Lip Gloss Boy ReMix)

I think Lil Mama's "Lip Gloss" song is way better than that "My Laces" song....idk he sounds very dry...and Lil Mama put made energy into her songs plus the girl can really spit

I like Lil Mama better like Shamontiel said Eric just sounds bored. I like enthusiasm and Lil Mama has that plus she can really rap, I heard her on Avril Lavigne's song and she can really flow. I like how you wrote this, I've never seen youtube videos embedded on an AC page so this was fun.

New flavor bubble gum music? I like the sound, groan on "lip gloss", but love the video and I like the song battles. I also saw some nike's I liked.

Lip Gloss is one of those songs that I said I didn't like but I would later catch myself singing it when I'm in car. I hadn't heard about Eric Crawley before. Good job on the article.

As for this contest, I'm going to give it to Lil' Mama. Eric sounds bored through this whole rhyme. Even though her subject matter was terrible, she sounded genuinely excited about the lip gloss. You could've replaced lip gloss with any other word (like "hip hop") and that would've give the song so much more credibility. But again, I can't take away her rapping skills. She really is doing her thing hardcore on the rapping tip.

However, I am very curious about her next song because I saw her freestyle on YouTube and she is soooooooooo New York, with the icy grill, the accent, and her whole demeanor. I know the label was trying to get people to pay attention to her, but I felt they went about it the wrong way. Then again, Eminem's first song was retarded too and we see where he went with his career, so I hope she can do it too. OH yeah, and do it while keeping her clothes ON!

I'm going to have to kinda backpack off of Gary with this one. I think that "Lip Gloss" song is insanely idiotic and along the same lines of "Chicken Noodle Soup." But I sat through that entire song once and in the middle when she rapped in the gym, I stood up and stared in shock. Why her record label didn't promote her without the corny opening song is what I don't understand. She's cute, she's a reasonable dancer, and she can rap her ASS off. I hate it when labels downgrade a lyricist's skill. She could've come out rapping about anything and served it well but this "It's popping/It's popping" stuff is just NOT for me.

Lil Mama offers a cool age relevant slant to music.

Sorry! I can't get into the music being pumped out these days unless it's club or house music. I don't care for the direction that the music is headed, especially in the R&B category. ALL of the male and female groups sound and dance the same. There is very little variation, and the battle thingy is getting old fast. With that said, it is VERY refreshing to have a Nora Jones, Joss Stone, John Legend, Jill Scott or Robin Thicke out there. These are REAL talents with REAL voices that allow us to escape the "bland" artists that now permeate the industry. Good job as usual Saba! "The G-man"

I love that battles are now fought on Youtube.
