Fun Family Activities for Summertime

Summer is here, and that means school is ending for the year for children. Most kids are excited by the thought of extended freedom. However, summer break can quickly become boring if parents are unprepared. Don't let your kids spend all summer long watching television or playing video games. Plan some family fun and enjoy the summer while it lasts! Here are a few ideas to excite the whole family.

Plan a family picnic.

Whether at home or at your favorite park, picnics are a fun change of pace. Kids love the opportunity to eat outside, and it's less clean up for parents as well. Fire up the grill, break out the paper plates, and enjoy an outdoor meal as a family.

Invest in water guns and balloons.

Need a break from the heat? When it's not convenient or possible to go swimming, a family water war can be extremely fun. Fill up plenty of water balloons, arm everyone with water guns, and prepare for battle. Expect to get soaking wet, so plan ahead, wear bathing suits, and have dry towels handy.

Go for a walk together.

Especially in early evening, family walks are a great opportunity to both get some exercise and to bond with your children. Walk around your neighborhood or find a nearby park with walking trails. This also provides a great opportunity to teach children about plant life, insects, and animals.

Go camping.

While going to campgrounds near a lake would make a great weekend trip, busy families don't always have the time for such escapes. Instead, camp out in the backyard. The whole family enjoys the fun of camping out while keeping the comfort of home. This also cuts out a lot of the expense of camping, and if it starts to rain, everyone can always head indoors. So set up the tent, pull out the sleeping bags, and douse everyone with insect repellent.
