Looking for a great place in the northeast to bring the family for the weekend? Consider taking a trip up to Old Orchard Beach on the southern coast of Maine.

Obviously, the major attraction is the seven-mile long sandy beach. The sand is kept surprisingly clean and garbage-free. I would recommend heading down toward either end of the beach to stake out a less busy spot. Since Maine is so far north, the water tends to be pretty chilly until July but kids usually don't even care. It is a very safe beach with lifeguards everywhere and small, rolling waves.

The Pier is the biggest landmark at Old Orchard Beach. There is a variety of pubs and dance clubs on the Pier that offer concerts and entertainment almost nightly. Be sure to check out Houligan's Landing if you're in the mood for some Irish food. Airbrush on the Pier is great place to get a souvenir from your weekend. They will airbrush designs of your choosing onto t-shirts, license plates, and the like. Caribbean Hair is a popular stop for braids, corn rows, and hair wraps. You'll notice lots of girls have these done. Another fun place to visit is Caricatures by Yishai. He's fun to watch and your caricature will be a great memory to bring home.

Palace Playland is New England's only beachfront amusement park. It features a carousel, Ferris wheel, and small roller coaster. There is a huge arcade that will keep the kids occupied for hours. The park also has a great variety of rides for the really little ones. I suggest going at night as the park looks nicer all lit up. A two-day pass will cost you $39.95.

Pirates Cove Mini Golf is within walking distance of the beach. The course features 36 holes of pirate themed mini golf. I don't usually like mini golf but this one was well kept up and nice to look at.

Every Thursday evening during the summer there is a long display of fireworks near the center of town.

A few night clubs and many small shops line the main road. If you happen to forget anything, I'm sure you can easily pick it up here.

The sandcastle contest, a favorite of mine, is taking place on July 2nd and 3rd this year. Keep in mind it will be busy this close to the fourth of July so make reservations early.
