High School: A Big Waste of Time

The following article is based on my own high school experience and may or may not be what you experienced or how your high school may have been set up.

I feel that most of junior high and high school was a waste of time, here's why:

Walking in the hallways- In my high school we had seven slots for classes. We had five minute passing periods to get to those classes. If you add that up, you will find that there is 35 minutes spent simply going from one class to another. This may not seem like a
lot of time, but that is 175 minutes a week, not quite three hours. If that number doesn't seem like a lot to you, think of this way. In the 180 days a year that I went to school, 6300 minutes was spent going from one class to the next. That totals to over 100 hours. So much time is wasted walking in the hallways to get to the next place of learning.

Class time- Each of my seven classes were approximately 45 minutes long (perhaps a couple minutes longer). I'd get to class and everyone would be talking. The teacher then would have to try to settle the class time. About 10-15 minutes would be spent on that. Then they would teach and assign homework in the next 15 minutes. After that, class would almost be over and everyone would start talking again, so then the next 15 minutes were spent trying to calm the class down again. It wasn't necessarily like this with all classes, but most of them were. So in that 45 minute period, only 15 minutes was spent with actual teaching. Add that up and not even 2 hours were spent with learning. Not that much for an 8 hour school day if you ask me.

I'm not sure how this can be fixed, but some schools do block scheduling now, thus giving you fewer classes a day. This also means less time spent in the hallway and more time spent in a classroom. Whether or not this will improve anything, we'll have to wait and see. I doubt the average student attention span is all that long, so having a longer class may not do any good if the students attention is going to be elsewhere for longer.

  • Some subjects I doubt I'll ever use.

I feel a lot of high school is wasted time... but math is of incredible use. It teaches your brain to think logically and this will help you in invaluable ways throughout life. Simple example is problem solving, an every day encounter in work, relationships, everything... you're bring really one dimensional about the subjects taught!! -B.S. in math and hated high school too

apparently he couldn't hold onto his spelling lessons, or his lessons on homophones. "Teachers teach because that is there passion."

I wish something could be done. That's for sure. I have ideas that I think would make a huge improvement, but I wouldn't even know where to begin to try to put those ideas into actions.

interesting there has to be something the board of education can do to resolve this issue

The reason the schools cannot get more great teachers is because the great ones cannot afford to survive on the low salary and still make ends meet. This is a horrible shame. I remember when I was in college there were teachers going at night taking classes to leave the teaching field because it simply was not enough for them to pay their bills. These teachers did NOT live extravagant lives either. They were literally too poor to keep their bills paid on the low salary the schools paid. If the schools and the military budgets got switched you would see the great teachers returning to the schools again but not as it is now. There is definitely something wrong with the system.

My high school and middle school years were scattered all over the place because we moved a lot. I went to several different schools by the time I hit middle school years through high school when I finally had enough and left in 10th grade for my GED and AA; however, I have to say that back in my day, the time between classes were not wasted at most schools simply because of the sheer size of the schools. It took forever to get to lockers and to classes without having to drag every book you owned on your body. My children's classes are blocked where they have fewer classes with longer classtimes. Plus, we live in a district with a high rate for children attending universities after graduation. It makes a world of difference.

I just wrote a similar article on my own high school experience. I wonder...if so many people feel this way why do they send their own kids through it? Anyway, I hope you are able to discover who you are and find your path in life. Granted you *could* have been halfway there already but no use crying over spilled milk. You did learn something and you'll one day be a better parent for it. ;)
