If you want your children to eat right, you should start early. There are some simple ways that you and your family can get on the right track early, and that will help your children to make good decisions throughout their lives. The first choice you can make is not to purchase processed foods. These foods make our lives easier because you can pop a frozen lasagna entrée into the oven much more quickly than by making the whole thing yourself. The problem is that processed foods are high in sodium and cholesterol, and they have a number of preservatives that may not be healthy enough for you. These high-calorie foods provide empty calories instead of real nutrition, so you should avoid them at all costs. You should purchase fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible as these foods will be safer. Many scientists believe that non-organic produce has very little risk to humans from the pesticides used, but it is still a good idea to stay away from these pesticides whenever possible. You should try to buy from local farmers whenever you can. Their produce will be less expensive, and it supports the local economy in addition to having fewer chemicals because of the fact that they aren’t packaged for shipping. If you are concerned about chemicals on produce but cannot get what you need from local farmers, then you can peel the fruits and vegetables. Be aware that you may be taking away some of the nutrients when you do it, but you can get rid of the pesticides without the peeling. Another option is to wash the produce with a fruit detergent and brush. That will keep the produce clean. Avoid diet supplements in your child’s diet. You shouldn’t give artificial sweeteners to your children. These diet aids are not intended for little ones although they are most likely safe for them. You can give artificial sweeteners to your diabetic child, but you should substitute these drinks with water, milk, and juices whenever possible. While you may want to give your child the occasional artificially-flavored drink, you should avoid doing it on a regular basis. Remember that you should not feed your children anything that could possibly be contaminated. If you believe that produce may be slightly past its freshness, but it’s something you and your partner would eat anyway, toss it on the children’s behalf. Because their organs aren’t fully developed, they are not as equipped to handle spoiled foods. You also should watch meats to make sure they’re fresh, and be careful when you pick up shellfish for your family to eat. Watch how much fat your baby eats. You should not eliminate fat from your little one’s diet as that is not healthy. Your child’s organs need fat to develop properly, but you should limit the amount of animal fat available to your children. You can do that by trimming the fat from all of the meats you eat, rinsing ground meats after you cook them, and cooking with oil instead of butter. The most important tip in getting your child to be healthy is to have a wide variety of foods available. You should provide various green vegetables to your children. Always have a green vegetable available on your table. That should include asparagus, broccoli, green beans, Brussels sprouts, sweet peas, and others. Cook them in different ways to make them more appealing to your family. With smaller children, you can spice things up as well. You can offer different juices from orange and apple. You also should try different types of cereals and other foods that small children eat. Even with baby food, you can work to have different types of food on different days so that your children will be accustomed to having a range of foods available to them. Good eating habits started early can mean a lifetime of good health for you and your family members. Even if you haven’t eaten well in the past, you can begin to do so now. You can make changes gradually or make a drastic change to your family’s eating habits. Make a choice today for your family to engage in healthier eating.
