One important part of the regular monthly budget is food. People need to eat in order survive. According to a money report prepared by CNN in 2002, it stated that food took up 14% of the consumer's total yearly expenses. In a 2-person household, CNN reported that $38,050 a year was spent on major expenses.
It also stated that not very many people shopped for groceries to eat at home any more, and eating out had become more popular. Out of the $5,150 that was estimated on buying food, it was estimated that 58% of that was spent on eating out.
One reason families may avoid grocery shopping is because of the scare that they receive at the register when they pay for the food that was purchased. It's easy to throw items in your cart without thinking, and many take on this task without even a list to follow. If families would follow a few simple steps before shopping at the grocery store, they could save extra money that could go towards other aspects of their budget.
