Socrates held that living well meant living with virtue. In turn, philosophy embodies virtue and therefore, life is philosophy. According to Socrates, the only life worth living is the life of philosophy; without philosophy, life is not worth living at all. In the Crito, Socrates states that he will suffer his punishment of death rather than disobey the state. In the Apology however, Socrates states that he will not stop philosophizing even if the state outlaws it along with the punishment of death. Although these two statements seem blatant contradictions, the validity of their non-contradictory nature is not hard to understand. Socrates' definition and view of philosophy and persuasion, respectively, help to eliminate the seeming incongruity between his two statements and aid to further his philosophy.

Socrates incompliance is where I believe you are stating that he may have been wrong, but sometimes incompliance is the right thing to do as in his case. He is my all time favorite and study him often, more as a hobby and exercise of the mind, rather than for work or specific study. Thanks for writing a great piece. Keep up the good work.

Socrates was virtuous to the end. He was given the choice to either go into exile and never practice philosophy or die. He chose death, but in his case death was the same as exile. He obviously would not have achieved the same level of greatness had he run, but again, he chose death. But even at the hour of his death he worried about others. He gave comfort where he could. He even chose to bathe so the women who would come tend his body would at least have a clean body to move around. And in the short moments before he died he asked for his friend to settle a debt for him. Who but Socrates would think of something like that as he knocked on death's door? Your piece was intriguing and thought provoking. Well done. E.L.Morin
