There are plenty of people looking for work-at-home jobs, but it seems that there are comparatively few opportunities. After you weed out the scams and turn down the ones that average $5 per hour, you're left with precious few attractive openings. However, there are a few work-at-home jobs that you might not have considered, particularly those that don't seem as though they could be done at home.

Administrative Assistant

It is no longer necessary for admin employees to sit behind large wooden desks, answering phones and taking messages. In fact, the majority of an administrative assistant's job is conducted either on the telephone or over the Internet, which makes it a prime work-at-home job that you might not have considered.

The only downside is that you will probably have to start out in-house before your employer trusts you to work from home. Once you've proven your competency, simply broach the subject with your boss.

Advertising Sales Representative

According to recent statistics collected by the U.S. government, Americans are subjected to more than 3,000 advertisements every day. This means that someone has to sell the ad space for Internet web sites, television, signage and print publication. Since this job is conducted primarily over the phone, it's a great work-at-home job you probably have no considered.

Event Planner

Event planners can work for a wide variety of industries, including wedding, charity, corporate and professional organizations. If you have great attention to detail and the ability to multi-task, you might want to look into becoming an event planner. This work-at-home job can lead to maximum flexibility and those who work in the industry say it's a lot of fun. The only downside: Most work on commission.

Computer Technician

These days, it isn't necessary for a computer owner to lug his or her machine into the store for a fix; instead, a phone call can solve most problems. Many computer savvy individuals make a great buck working as computer technicians. It's a work-at-home job that allows you to create your own hours and set your own rates.

To enhance your work-from-home opportunities and grow your business, consider joining local Chambers of Commerce. Large metro areas chambers may be prohibitively expensive, but the chamber in your local suburb (yes, there probably is one) is more affordable and likely has mostly small-business members who can use part-time, work-from-home assistance with "back office" work like admin assitant, sales calls (cold or follow-up), planning marketing events like open-houses, and computer tech support. And they'll trust you because you're local and a chamber member. Just remember to be helpfully active in your local chamber, not just always seeking jobs from other members.

Definitely worth considering in this day of shrinking "brick and mortal" shop employment.
