The "Holy Dog of Tibet" as the Tibetan Terrier is referred to, was cherished and viewed as something far more than an animal or insignificant beast. It was revered. The breed is of medium size and features a thick coat, a compact and sturdy build, and hair that covers the eyes and face. The feet are large and flat, which of course, were used for gaining traction in the wintry, mountainous conditions of Tibet. The eyes tend to be dark brown and the color of the coat varies, but normally includes a prominent amount of white. As far as weight, this dog will weigh in at 20 to 30 pounds, although their weight may be plus or minus a dog biscuit or two either way.
No family that invests their time and hearts into the Tibetan Terrier will be disappointed. At it's best in an enclosed yard with a loving family, this dog will certainly enrich any family lucky enough to call the it their own. The Tibetan is seemingly analytical, making it one of the most undervalued dogs when the discussion of "intelligence" comes up. That is normally a category that gets reserved for Collies, Shepherds, Poodles, and such, but make no mistake about it, the Tibetan Terrier will gladly throw its ACT score into the ring.
In regards to its thick coat, it does take some work and requires a bath every 6 weeks, sometimes once per month. Consistent brushing is required to prevent matting. However, short puppy cuts remain a popular hairstyle with this breed, much like the Shih Tzu.
There aren't many health conditions exclusive to this breed as compared to others. The common canine problem of hip dysplasia affects the Tibetan Terrier much like it plagues other breeds. It has also been known to battle hypothyroidism and the common eye problems that so many breeds deal with as they age.
By the way, if you are interested in a rescue program involving this breed, the Tibetan Terrier Club of America can be found at www.ttca-online.org
So in closing, if an affable, affectionate, and gorgous breed of dog is your thing (and we certainly hope that it is), the Tibetan Terrier would make a fantastic choice as your family's new best friend.
