So far this year, believe it or not, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has reported over 1033 airplane incidents. Some of these range from an airplane getting struck on the wing by a passing fuel truck to fatal air crashes! Out of these 1033 airplane incidents, 124 have been fatal air crashes! 311 people have lost their lives since January 1, 2007. Of the 1033 accidents, 92% of them are occurring on final approach to the runway. Also, 241 of these accidents are the landing gear collapsing on landing on the runway....none of these were fatal!
Flying is the still the safest way to travel! At any given moment, there are over 4000 airplanes in the sky. There are millions of passengers everyday of the year. Your chances of being in a fatal air crash are more than 1 in 2,000,00! You have a better chance of getting struck by lightening! The chances that you are in a car crash are......1 in 8! If you think airplanes crash because pilots don't know what they are doing, think again! If you fly on a commercial airliner, it takes years for the pilot to go through the training needed to fly that plane. The bigger the plane, the more training or experience is needed. Every year, every pilot must attend and pass a vigorous flight simulation plan.
So you think it may be the air traffic controllers fault....think again! These ladies and gentlemen go through "hell" before they graduate from their course in Oklahoma City! An aircrafts pilot is constantly in communication with air traffic control....always! Try this, go buy a scanner and sit at the end of a runway at a busy airport and tune in to the local runway frequency.....you will see what I am talking about...plus it is fun!
Here is the best part for me anyway.....learn to fly! To feel the freedom once you lift off the ground when you are in control is the best feeling in the world! Even if flying is not your thing, go to your local airport and let them know you want an introductory flight. It is awesome. You will get to listen to air traffic control and see what pilots have to do before and after every flight to make sure you as a passenger are safe in the skies! So when you are in the sky next time either as a pilot or a passenger, enjoy and relax, notice the awesome views and know that you are traveling the safest way there is! Have Fun!
