Problems Associated with LASIK Surgery

While LASIK surgery is a life-changing procedure undergone by millions of people worldwide to correct bad vision, many people experience complications from this type of corrective surgery. Some of these complications are quite rare but others happen more often. A person thinking of undergoing LASIK surgery should be the aware of the possible downsides.

If you are thinking of having LASIK surgery you should ask your surgeon lots of questions. Ask the surgeon to perform an orb scan before doing your LASIK surgery. An orb scan will ensure that your eye is compatible with LASIK surgery. If your surgeon does not have an orb scan machine seek out another surgeon. If the LASIK procedure is done on your eye and your eye is not compatible, you could have uncorrectable vision for the rest of your life as a result.

One of the most common complication of LASIK surgery is infection of the eyes. Antibiotics are administered before the surgery but there is still a chance of infection. Most of the time the infection is easily treatable with a prescription. Usually there are no further problems once the infection goes away.

Sometimes there can be extreme swelling of the eye after LASIK surgery. This is an a problem with inflammation that is often addressed with steroids, and usually clears up with no long-term effects.

Some patients report having halos, star burst effects or bad nighttime vision after undergoing the LASIK procedure. Unfortunately these patients tend to require additional procedures in order to fine tune the results of the first LASIK surgery. Sometimes this is a permanent problem that can be incurable. Another complication associated with LASIK surgery is movement of the cornea flap. This occurs when the patient accidentally rubs their eyes before the incision has time to heal. When this occurs the patient must immediately return to the doctor to have the flap replaced back into position. Once the incision is allowed to heal and the flap has been properly placed there are usually no further problems.
