I first remember hearing about "Jamie" from my aunt's friend, Michelle. Michelle was a residential counselor for "at risk" youth and "Jamie" was a combination of a minor celebrity in the local area and a court-ordered resident at the center where she worked. To some, "Jamie" was a troubled teenager who "ratted out" her friends to save herself. To others, she was somewhat of a hero who stopped a supposed massacre at New Bedford High School before it happened. Only a year after the renowned "Columbine" incident, the peers she hung out with were planning an episode that, in their words, was meant to "outdo Columbine". However, the only female of the consortium, she had a change of heart the night before. With her premature sense of remorse, she made a visit to the home of her "favorite" teacher, warning her not to go to school the next day. This visit turned into a full-on, sob-evoking confession that led to police involvement and the timely arrest of the conspiratorial students before such a homicidal plan could come into fruition. However, when my aunt forwarded me some google articles and a picture, I quickly noticed that a suicide plot wasn't the only secret "Jamie" had been holding.

sorry for the "cut off" in the last comment...computer issues rendered a double post and I guess longevity limits prohibited my complete comment. However, I think reading the article posits causations for such behavior...no, it's not just a fad nor is it "new"... Thank you for the props all those who enjoyed it

Just to clarify a bit....NO, cutting is now "new" and no, it is not just a fad in the sense that it lacks the seriousness it deserves. HOWEVER, if you work in a psychological capacity with "at risk" adolescents, you are blatantly aware that there is a significant upsurge in this type of behavior. Similar to other teen behaviors....drinking,substance abuse, binging and purging...there are trends that self-destructive behaviors follow that render them "obscure" at any given time or "the in thing to do"..unfortunately. Correlating to the new popularity of "emo" music amongst many teens, it is almost "cool" to be self-deprecating, hate the world, and, yes...to "cut". Therefore, similar to, perhaps, marijuana use....it is not "new", however there are certainly periods in time where it is the "new teen TREND", and other times when it has not been. As for the seriousness of cutting, I believe I do mention in the article the causality for such self-injurious behavior (sib), as it has been h

Was interested in what you had to say on the topic, but not enough for 13 pages. Because I did not read it, I do not know if you pointed out that cutting is not simply a new teen-fad. When people can not hurt the people who abuse them they hurt themselves instead.

What sobering statistics - thank you for sharing it.

Thank you for putting this information out there. Parents often overlook the dangers a young person can bring upon themselves because they focus on the dangers of others and often don't want to believe one of their own could indulge in such dangerous behavior. I agree with anonymous that it is not "new", but it may be newly revived. A female friend of mine revealed this startling information about herself, and she is in her forties and has been a victim of her own misfortune for many years.

Very informative article. Very enjoyable read. As for Anonymous, perhaps the writer meant that there is a recent case of this disorder going around? Just some thoughts, but a great read none-the-less...

Very informative article, however, your title is misleading. Cutting has been around for quite some time and is not "new".
