How to Make Plaster of Paris Lady Bug

Many of the landscaping pieces which can be purchased in retail stores starting in the spring have a plaster of Paris base. Many of these pieces can be very pricey. Even the smallest of pieces can begin to break the bank if you were to purchase several of them.

These plaster of Paris style garden figurines, statues, and bases are massed produced for very little with a high mark up cost. The styles of the
garden features change with each season.

There are plastic molds which can be purchased in hobby and craft stores to make your own smaller garden decorations. You can purchase miniature, small, medium, and large molds in many of these craft stores.

You could also use the molds you find in the soap and candle making isle for smaller plaster of Paris items for your garden, yard or inside house plants. This will allow you to create different items for each season or even your moods.

Many of the premade yard art pieces are covered with a polyurethane to protect the pieces from the elements of the weather. The polyurethane will also help keep the colors bright and vibrant.

Materials Needed for Making Plaster of Paris Yard Art

Plastic Molds.
The plastic molds will be used to make the shapes for your yard art pieces.

Plaster of Paris. You can purchase the plaster of Paris in arts and craft section of Walmart or any arts and craft store. The kind I used for the pieces I made was microwavable.

Small Bucket. You will need a small bucket to mix the water and plaster of Paris in.

Stirring stick or utensil. This will be needed to mix the water and plaster of Paris.

Paint, stain, mosaic pieces. (Optional) You do not necessarily have to decorate your pieces, but many do with eighter paint, stain or by adding the mosaic pieces into the plaster of Paris before it dries.

Paint brushes. (Optional) The Paint brushes will be used to paint or stain the molded pieces.

Polyurethane. The polyurethane should be used on any and all pieces to help protect them from further moisture.
