I've written many UFC articles lately. The only thing booming faster than the amount of articles I've written on the UFC is the UFC's popularity and the money the UFC is raking in. The UFC is making a boatload of money all around, except for the fighters.

Right now the UFC fighters are not making as much money as they should. In April of 2005 the UFC had two of their most popular fighters Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell face each other. According to some reports the PPV had 280,000 buys at $34.95 each. That makes the show worth $9.8 million dollars. Chuck Liddell was only paid $140,000 and Randy Couture was paid $150,000. That means the main event fighters, the main reason people tuned in, got about three percent of the money.

In February the UFC held the third meeting between Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell. This time the PPV did 410,00 buys at $39.95 each, which comes out to $16.34 million. In the rematch Randy Couture got $225,000 and Chuck Liddell got $250,000. Again this comes out to about three percent. The entire card as a whole was paid $656,000, which is four percent of the earnings.

I know there are some people shaking their heads right now saying I'm crazy. They have $250,000 what more could they want? I'd kill for $250,00! If that is all you have to say then don't bother commenting because I'm not buying it. If the UFC is making $16.34 million for one show then the top draw should be making more than $250,000. You might think it's crazy that the athletes even get $656,000 combined but it's more ridiculous that the people not fighting made $15.6 million. Ok, so they didn't get all of that, there is the cost of the venue, production, marketing, etc, but that all comes out to about $5 million. So the non-fighters are still making $10.6 million, seventeen times more than the fighters are.

Takeaways
  • At the UFC PPV in February the fighters only got four percent of the money the UFC earned.
  • At one boxing PPV last year the main eventers got twenty-eight percent of the money earned.
  • UFC fighters should be paid as much as boxers.

Damn right he is. If his name is brought up anywhere and you have a pulse you know who he is. If he fights you watch, make that everyone watches. If he brings more views to the talbe why not pay him more? He could go somewhere else. Dana White and Zuffa, kiss my ass! Bug

Amen! that is all i have to say, that and I totally agree that these people should get payed more money. I have been doing brazilian jiu-jitsu at Tai Kai with some people like Marc Stevens, Matt Hamill, and i have even been privleged enough to train with the legendary Marcelo Garcia since i was 8 and I train MMA and BJJ still. I am currently 15 years old and i am hopeing to make a living doing MMA and $250,000 sounds like a lot but when you are out there risking everything and getting the shit kicked out of you for other people's entertainment thats a small price. There are guys who make 10 times what the most popular MMA fighters make and in all honesty they should be making more money than some total bum who when someone pushes him at the freethrow line lays on the ground and cries his mascutinity out. Someone needs to get in the octagon with Dana White and then we'll see how much "his" fighters are making after that brutal 15 minutes.

Tito *is* a whiner (Yeah, I said it!), but a whiner with a point. Dana White once said, "Some of my fighters make a decent living, and some make a very good living." Wonder how good Dana's living is!

I never really thought about it like that, but you are definitely right. I just though Tito was a whinny bitch lol

I am a MMA Fighter and I can tell you this is not just a UFC issue it is an MMA issue. I just attended an independant MMA local octagon fight where the fighters were paid nothing and the gate was $20-$40 a seat. I know your talking the big time but these poor Bstrds trainned hard and there were a few ambulance runs. Nor right at all!

Chuck Liddell got a quarter of a million dollars for one fight and he's underpaid?

Posted on 08/01/2007 at 10:08:00 PM

Think about it, these guys have to pay trainers, medical professonals, provide for their families, and unlike football players, basball players and hockey players there is no union to speak for them! In addition, most fighters only fight 2-3 times a year..Wow so even a decent fighter racking in $15,000 a fight only makes $45,000 a year; to put ur life on the line..that sucks. Now, Mr. White how much do u get every fight? Must be nice to rake in that kind cash!!

I do agree that they are underpaid, but the promotion has many other things to pay for besides fighters. Gate revenue, as stated by another commenter, a lot of that goes to the arena. The Pay-Per-View companies also take a portion of the pay-per-view money. There was also a lot of advertising and marketing that went into those Couture/Liddell fights. Also, all of the ring setup, tear down, etc, etc, etc... yes, UFC may be taking more than they should, but it's not as drastic as you make it seem in my opinion.

it seems that the ufc is starting to have its own issues like boxing...

Great article. You forgot to factor the gate into the equation, which is even more cash in Dana White's pocket. This is exactly why Tito Ortiz is on the outs with them, because he had the balls to say that it's wrong, and UFC is trying their best to discredit him in any way possible.

wow interesting stuff man, highly unfair for such skilled hardworking athletes. One problem like with soccer (from Ireland) when athletes get too well paid they get cocky and too arrogant and lazy, look at mike tyson but surely there should but a middle ground! You cant call chuck a superstar if my mate who works in a bank is making as much as him!!!

Posted on 06/05/2007 at 1:06:00 PM

They should get paid more because they are probably at one of the highest risk groups for head and neck injuries.

Posted on 06/05/2007 at 1:06:00 PM

wow! I can't believe they're so underpaid, but it sheds new light on why boxing is dying out a little bit. those guys make TONS of money. turn attention to UFC, make it popular, and pay guys mere pennies for getting their brains knocked around a little...right.
