When summer rolls around to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, temperatures are hot enough to make the devil jealous. So what are you going to do to escape the summer heat? Head down to the pools? Go see a movie? Hit the mall? Sure, all of these can be a great way to escape the heat, but they can get old quickly, especially with summer crowds. If you're looking for something new, consider this: the Dallas Symphony Orchestra offers casual summer concerts at a good rate. Not only can you get out of the summer heat, but you can brush up on your Beethoven while you're at it!

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra began over a hundred years ago and features more than one hundred musicians in strings and brass. The four conductors are highly talented people who received their educations from places such as the State Musical Academy in Sofia to the California State University Northridge and hail from places as far away as Germany and Bulgaria.

The summer concerts of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will run every Saturday from June 23rd to July 14th and begin at 7:30 p. m. They will feature music from such artists as Brahms, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, and Bach. If classical music isn't your cup of tea, some the concerts will also feature more contemporary music, such as the works of Gershwin and variations on "I Got Rhythm."

I recently had the pleasure of attending the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's Memorial Day Concert. I was delighted with the talent of the orchestra, as well as the obvious care that went into the selection of music. From a number of Sousa marches to music from West Side Story to the anthems of each branch of military service, the music was chosen to please a general audience unfamiliar with classical music, as well as to honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces. The conductor for this concert, Danail Rachev, was a delight, animated in both his speaking and conducting. I have no doubt the summer concerts will be of equal quality.
