Kidnapped BBC Reporter Alan Johnston Video Released as Proof of Life
Journalist Alan Johnston was abducted by militants in the occupied Palestinian Territory about three months ago on March 12. The militant group that has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, and who has posted the video on the Islamist militant Web site al-Ekhlaas, is called the Army of Islam. The Web site al-Ekhlaas where the video was posted is often used by al-Qaeda. It is unclear at this time exactly when the video was made, but officials are leaning toward it recently being made.
In a report filed by Nidal al-Mughrabi of Reuters, Johnston elaborated on his treatment since his abduction saying, "My captors have treated me very well. They have fed me well. There has been no violence towards me at all and I'm in good health."
In the video, according to a report filed by Sarah El Deeb of the Associated Press, he went on to denounce Israel as a whole saying, "In three years here in the Palestinian territories I witnessed the huge suffering of the Palestinian people, and my message is that the suffering is continuing and it is unacceptable."
He went on to denounce the U.S. and British foreign policy in the Mideast, and that Britain's side-by-side involvement with the U.S. in occupying the Islamic lands of Iraq and Afghanistan was wrong saying, "In all this, you can see the British government is endlessly working to occupy Muslim lands against the will of the people in those places," according to the Reuters report.
He went on to add, according to the Associated Press, "We the British are completely to blame, along with the Americans, for the situation in Iraq, the British are the main force in Afghanistan, causing all the trouble to all the simple Afghans who simply want to live."
However Johnston's reputation as a reporter was one of complete objectivity, so it more than likely he was being forced to recite the statements according to the views of his captors.
