An antique car owner is a bit like a collector of beautiful things become artist. After buying a beautiful object he then begins tinkering with it, changing it slightly here and there, to make it his. Perhaps he restored it, or changed its color. Some antique car owners carefully research the details in order to get it as close to its original state as he possibly can. He is working to create an illusion of newness, and this takes a lot of time and care.

Not everyone understands the time he puts into his project car. Not everyone understands why car shows are so important to him or why he wants every inch of his baby to be buffed and polished each time he takes it around the block. They certainly don't understand his strange reactions whenever someone offers to buy the car, why he can go from, "Did you hear how much he offered me?" to "How does he think he can buy my car?" in 60 seconds.

Regardless of whether other people really understand the relationship you have with your car, however, it is important for you to listen to your heart and do everything possible to keep it in the best condition possible. If it is important to you, then that is all that matters. Make sure you use only the best liquids for its engine, from the top gasoline to the best oil. Use the wax that will give it the absolute best shine. To protect that was job, and the paint job underneath, keep it in a garage and under a tarp. Terrible things can happen to a paint job in a garage.

After all, the enjoyment you get out of your antique car makes as much sense as the enjoyment your wife gets from going out and spending tons of money on shoes she doesn't wear, right? And what about the new toys your husband buys on a regular basis? Is he a golfer? What joy do a set of golf clubs bring to the world? They are important only to the person who actually uses them, but a shiny antique automobile is a pleasure for anyone who looks at it, whether they are into cars or not.

Not that one hobby is better than another. But don't let anyone talk you out of yours. Anything that brings pleasure and doesn't hurt anyone is a worthwhile pursuit.
