New England is known for its ski slopes, brutal Nor'easters and lots of lobster. But when the weather turns warmer, those northern states have plenty more fun to offer. Everyone's heard of the great beaches of Cape Cod and the posh surrounding of many coastal islands, but why get burned on a crowded beach where the water's too cold to go swimming? Take a trip away from the shore and into the mountains and picturesque towns of northern New England. Having taken many family summer trips to the White and Green Mountain states and also having lived in New Hampshire for several years, I've put together a guide to the greatest the north has to offer. These places could be a quick weekend get-a-way or an all out summer road trip. They're certainly much more wallet friendly than a voyage to the Caribbean and arguably just as much fun. Whichever you choose, you might be surprised at how much fun you'll have away from the seashore and into the woods.

New Hampshire is a small state hiding great adventures. With barely more than 10 miles of coastline to its name, it's the perfect state to start a New England excursion. Portsmouth is a large city right on the coast. It has a nice waterfront where a great historic district has been restored. Travel the cobblestone streets and sample some seafood, but don't stay too long - mountain adventure awaits!

This adventure will require you to get off the highway and get on the back roads. Trust me, it's a much more interesting drive. Head north to the White Mountains State Park through the Lake District. The routes will be adorned with small farm stands and antique shops so pull over if curiosity strikes you.

I've been to the Balsams twice, and it is absolutely incredible. The view is astounding, and the food is divine. Thanks for the tips - I'll be sure to check out the White Mountain State Park the next time I visit New Hampshire!

It seems like everyone is so caught up with going to the beach and getting tan theses days, I think an adventurous outdoor adventure is an excellent alternative. I am on my way to looking up some of these places mentioned in more detail. Thanks!
