There are many ways to pass a pleasant summer day in Roanoke, but this article will highlight a few family oriented activities. The largest and most exciting of these is the arrival of the twentieth annual Salem Fair. The Salem Fair will arrive on June 28, 2007 and stay for eleven fun filled days of rides, shows, games and expositions. The exhibits will feature homemaking, horticulture, photography and farm products. New this year is the Virginia's Best Poundcake Recipe Contest.

Among the daily attractions this year will be Mark Preston and His Comedy Safari Show. It will combine comedy, magic and whip tricks, along with audience participation into one great show that will keep you laughing long after you leave. The Victoria Circus presents a first class, professional show in a family atmosphere. It will feature the Globe of Death, the Highwire, the Incline Motorcycle, the Roman Rings and more. The Amazing Rainforest Experience provides not only an entertaining show but an ongoing display featuring a unique collection of over twenty different species. You will have the chance to see animals rarely seen in captivity including an Asian Fishing Cat. The Kandu and Company Magic Show have delighted their audiences for the last twenty years. Their show features live music, sound effects, gags and comedy. The fun filled Wild and Wacky Game Show chooses contestants from the audience and involves them in all sorts of games and fun. The Elephant Encounter is an educational as well as entertaining experience for the entire family with two live elephants. A Dairy Farm on Wheels and Hedricks Petting Zoo round out the line up for this year.

On the Midway Degeller Attractions Inc. will feature about three dozen rides and more than a dozen places to indulge your appetite. Last year more than eleven thousand funnel cakes were sold at the fair! A wide variety of games to play and prizes to win adds to the fun and excitement.
