Promoting content is one important element of freelance writing.

It is easy to promote recently published content, that may have been recently written and submitted. We are still excited about the article, and its publication. The topic is fresh on our minds. These factors make promoting a just published article pretty easy.

But what about older articles that may not have been given the royal promotional treatment (whatever that may be in your personal promotion scheme)?

What about those articles that we love but it seems like nobody else read? Do you have articles you wrote a year ago that are still useful and relevant to (kudos to you, you're doing the right thing)?

There are methods that you can use to promote older or dusty content.

1. Organized and Methodical Approach to Promoting Older Content

One way to promote already published articles is to take a completely methodical approach. Start from the most recent, or from the oldest, and create an online index by topic and sub-topic. The index can be in an the form of a free web site that you create.

The main advantage to taking an organized and methodical approach when you promote older content is that it can help you see the bigger picture in regards to your content. For example, you may consider yourself a health writer, but then when you take a detailed look back at your content you can see that you have really developed as an entertainment writer.

Taking a methodical approach to promoting older content can help you see how you have developed as a writer. It can also help you determine where you are going as a writer.

2. Spontaneous Promotion

If the idea of organized and methodical promotion of older content bores you to death (so sorry, blame my inner librarian), you may benefit from taking a more spontaneous approach to promote your articles.

Whenever you re-visit an older article, give it the treatment - the promotional treatment, that is.

Great-- I've been posting a link at the end of each of my blog entries. Today, I wrote about my new adopted brother and linked it to my Goddesses of Motherhood article-- try to tie them in if I can.
