Why People Look in Your Grocery Cart While You Are Shopping

Lee17007 from the AC forum asked "Seriously what is the deal with checking someone out and then checking their groceries? Is there some international grocery guessing game I'm not aware of where you're supposed to look at a shopper and guess what they are buying, then you check to find
 out?" in his blog.

Those are two very interesting questions as to why people look into other people's shopping carts while in the store. There are many reasons people do this. While some may seem obvious to the other shopper, some of the reasons others look into carts of other grocery shoppers isn't so obvious.

In some cases, some people are just downright nosey and that's all there is to it. You know the judgemental kind who think they are "all that and a bag of chips including the dip." That everyone should eat the way they do, like a bird living on seeds or rabbits living on vegetables. Need I go on? Probably not at all.

Tips as to Why There are Shopping Cart Peeping Toms

However, here is what I have learned as to why people look into other people's shopping carts while they are doing their weekly grocery duty. It isn't a scientific study or anything like that. It is mainly being a sales floor clerk, customer service booth clerk, cashier, and various other departmental worker.

Tip One: People are just nosey and bored.

People in general are just nosey and want to see what their fellow shoppers are buying. It mainly stems from the boredom of shopping. Many people don't like to shop, so they do anything they can to take away from the boredom.

During the cases of nosiness and boredness during the grocery shopping duty of the week, they notice the person walking straight at them down the isle. In some cases, the glance to the cart is because they don't want the actual verbal exchange between two people.

While, all your comments are true, these are the other reasons people look into shopping carts and of course, who really wants to be judged by what you really buy at any store.

I think it falls into the category of people watching

LOL, I tend to agree with the last comment. I catch myself watching the person in front of me unloading their groceries onto the counter and I find myself judging them, not always in a bad way though. Oftentimes I start wondering what their life is like. I guess it is a sort of guessing game, it is just unconscious, I promise :)

Are you kidding? People look in other shoppers' carts because they are quietly judging you. It's that simple. They take one look at your cart full of twinkies, hot dogs, and Hamburger Helper then they glance at your ass and think, "No wonder!"
