Irresponsible Advertising

Amber Alert it is Not

Commercial advertising for the general public should be responsible. It should not endanger children in the interest of promoting a product. Missing children is a real threat and children need to know how to be safe and how to avoid being kidnapped.

Verizon has a series of commercials on television for it's Fios product. The commercials seem to teach children how not to be safe. It promotes talking to strangers in cars on the sidewalk witout their parents. In such a situation even the parent should be wary and ask for identification.
This however is not the case.

A very disturbing Verizon Vios commercial has been runing for the past several weeks on local tv stations in my area. The commercial shows a small child standing curbside alone with a stranger whose back door of a van is open supposedly from Verizon Vios. The adult engages the child in conversation dazzling him with his truck and information about the cable service.

What is so disturbing? Why would a child of arounf 5 years old be out alone on a suburban sidewalk talking to a stranger in a van? The child should not be on the curb, should not be talking to a stranger and could if the person was less than well meaning, be kidnapped and lost forever...

Today a follow up commercial was shown where the young boy has gone inside to speak to his unconcerned father who is reading a newspaper inside the house, totally dumbfounded and out of touch as the child rattles off the information about the service told by the stranger. The next scene, the child and father are outside watching the Verizon man running wires to a box and the boy tells the father, "you should see his truck". The man does not show any ID to identify himself as the Verizon Rep.

These commercials show a parent who has no control or concern for the child who can wander in and out of the house at will and a child with no training to beware of strangers. A 5 year old or similar age is too young to be unsupervised. Young children, teens and even older folks, have been taken into vehicles against their will and have been kidnapped, raped and killed.

Re Criticism of Commercials, The commercials on the Superbowl ore the most expensive and most watched every year. 20good as 2007 and 2006 in my opinion. There isa channel with a show that only shows commercials! Also there are awards for commercials like the Obies. Criticism of commercials is quite common. Liquor and cigarrette commercials were removed from television a number of years ago due to criticism. Commercials are short films that can create a lot of controversy!

I do enjoy commercials and look forward to the Obies. There is even a tv channel that only shows great commercials. I know it is not real life but a 4 year old grandson thought it was. He said that the man was nice, he had a nice truck and lights. I had to explain to him that it was not a good idea to talk to a stranger in a truck without parental permission. he disagreed. There were actually abductions and rapes in my neighborhood of several young ladies by a man using a similar truck. He was later caught when someone saw a person screaming before the door shut. Around the time I wrote several children were taken in a similar truck in my grandsons area.

Don't people have anything else to do with their lives except critize commercials. They are for fun and to buy the product only -- This isn't real life!!

Hi, I saw the person cutting the trees that you mentioned solver. It was at the end of the commercial after the child would have already been taken, and after the discussion inside the house. That person could be hired help and a possible witness or not with their back facing the street.

Thank you for your opinions. Children do not ask a parent how to interpret these things. They just do with their own understanding. In my city, about two weeks ago and reported on the tv news, a 4 year old was kidnapped in a vehicle, raped and dropped off 15 blocks away.

My son isn't taught by the tv. He listens to his parents.

Thats crazy!! Commercials are commercials. Get over it losers!

The commercial should have had the boy running away screaming "He talked to me! The stranger talked to me! Police! Police!" That would have made more sense for the commercial... 1geraldine, you've got to be kidding! Get a life! Turn off your TV if you have problems with its content. Find something of use to focus on.

Well, what about that cute little dog that sings "there ain't no bugs on me..." that's a double negative, totally incorrect grammar and everyone thinks its cute...bad grammar is NOT cute. However, it is a TV commercial and obviously (hopefully) not intended as an English lesson. Or, how about those stupid Swiffer commercials? Has your child starting talking to the mop yet? In the follow-up Verizon commercial it is evident that the boy's father knew that the boy had been speaking with the Verizon FIOS tech. Plus, I got the distinct impression that the little boy is too smart to get into a truck with a stranger. And, the boy is just adorable. I agree with solver...the onus is on you to teach your kids how to be safe and make sure they know the difference between reality and make-believe...or do they think that Barney and the Teletubbies are real? With the shows on TV these days, do we really want our kids learning from television? Unfortunately, too many do....fortunately, a f
