The entire city of Deadwood, South Dakota is on the National Historic Register. Deadwood is the largest historic preservation project in the United States, making it a living showcase of history.

The city, located in the Black Hills of Western South Dakota, was incorporated in 1876. It was named for the dead trees in the narrow canyon, Deadwood Gulch. Gold prospectors flocked to the city during the Gold Rush, making it a Gold Rush boomtown. Famous gunslingers and gamblers roamed the main street of the rollicking town during the late 1800's. Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok were well known old-west personalities who added color to Deadwood. Calamity Jane and "Wild Bill' Hickok are buried in the cemetery in Deadwood, known as Boot Hill.

The First Gold Hotel is notable for it's located on the actual site of the first gold discovery in Deadwood Gulch in 1875, which started to Gold Rush boom in town. There is 24 house Casino Gaming with video poker machines, live blackjack and 3-card poker tables. The hotel has deluxe accommodations, bar/lounge area/ and dining at The Horseshoe Restaurant featuring family dining. 800-274-1876.
