Regularly backing up important data on your computer is very important. Performing regular system backups is the single most important thing you can do to minimize data loss in the event of a major computer failure.

Many people often overlook the importance of backing up their computer data until the event of a major system crash. People often fear losing important data when a major system crash occurs. Many people don't realize how easy it can be to back up their computer data.

There are many methods available for performing backups. Some of the more common methods used in performing backups utilize storage media, such as CD-ROM drives and flash drives, which you may already have in your possession.

To back up your data using a flash drive, you should ensure that the flash drive has enough storage capacity to accommodate the amount of data you want to back up. Some people choose to use multiple flash drives, one flash drive for each type of data.

Using a CD-ROM to back up your data could potentially create quite a large stack of CDs which you will only use once or twice. Many CD-ROMS only hold approximately 700-800 MB of data, which means that it would take many CD's to facilitate a single backup. Not only is this somewhat of a costly disadvantage, it is also very time consuming., and you end up with a stack of CDs you might not otherwise use.

If you do not have any alternate storage media, you can also try using one of the many online backup services. Many online backup services provide at minimum 20GB of storage space for a small fee, often $4.95 USD. Some online data backup services are easier to use than others. Some online data backup services will allow you to upload entire folders at a time. Online data backups utilize your connection to the internet to allow you to perform backups. Online backups can take a lot of time, depending upon both the amount of data you are backing up as well as the speed of your internet connection. The advantage in using online backups is that you don't have to worry with creating a library of flash drives and CDs that you probably won't use very often.
