Computer failure is something that we all dread and, unfortunately, something we will all encounter at one time or another during our experiences with using computers. There are many common causes of computer failure, as well as many ways to recover from computer failure. Here are some common methods which have proven to be very useful in recovering from failure of your Windows based computer.

The most common cause of computer system failure is spyware and viruses. If you frequently use your computer to access the internet, you will inevitably encounter spyware and viruses. The best method to prevent these malicious programs is to be careful with what you download from the internet, particularly when downloading media files from peer-to-peer networks. Also, be sure that you clear your web browser's history and cookie folders on a daily basis. By neglecting to clean your cookie and history folders, you are basically inviting unwanted software onto your computer.

In order to recover from spyware and viruses, you absolutely must install an anti-virus program and an anti-spyware program. These types of programs offer up to date, real-time protection from spyware and viruses. In order to significantly reduce the chances of catastrophic system failure, be sure to scan for spyware and viruses at least one time each week.

If you encounter catastrophic system failure, there are many options available. Depending upon the severity of the system failure, you may or may not need to re-format your hard drive and re-install the operating system.

If you begin to encounter minor errors on your computer, you should first perform an error check of your hard disk. Windows scans and repairs errors on the hard disk. This will repair many common minor disk errors

Takeaways
  • The most common causes of system failure are viruses and spyware
  • Before re-installing Windows, try some other, less consuming repair methods
  • We will all inevitably face computer failure at some point

This is great advice. I keep all of my important files on an external hard drive should some go wrong with my computer and always scan for viruses and use a strong firewall.
