Prelude

My husband just got back from a trip to Big Bend National Park with our pastor. Everything written here is not from personal experience, but from his. With summer time fast approaching all of us are looking for things to do. Here is just one get away you might consider, especially if you are seeking relaxation.

Big Bend National Park is one of the largest and least visited of America's national parks. With over 800,000 acres opportunities to be amazed are endless. Ranging from a starting elevation of about 2,000 ft and ending at almost 8000 ft, Big Bend includes the entire Chisos mountains plus valleys, canyons, desert and much more. The National Park Service was established on August 25,1916..." to conserve the scenery and natural and historic objects and the wildlife...and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." In short, here at Big Bend National Park you have been given the opportunity to enjoy nature as it was intended to be. This is one place where you can enjoy solitude, nature, and beauty in ways that are rarely enjoyed now.

Wildlife

Big Bend is home to many types of animals, some of which are only seen in this immediate area. Examples of some of the animals here are as follows: Black bears, javelinas, skunks, coyotes, raccoons, mountain lions, snakes, spiders, lizards, as well as many types of birds and butterflies. To help people be able to enjoy the animals and be as safe as possible for animals and people, there are certain precautions to be taken. First, and foremost you are never to feed the animals, even the deer or birds. Not only is it against the law, it makes the animal become dependent on the human for food. This is not part a natural environment and makes the whole point of preserving this great park moot. For your own safety as well as the animals you must do your part to store food safely away and leave no type of food products where an animal can get to it.
