There are mainly four categories of the relatives for whom American citizens/ American residents can file the family visa application. The first category is called "immediate relatives". The spouse, parents, and the unmarried sons and daughters of US citizens are covered under this priority. This is the best priority and the applicants under this category are able to get US immigration visa almost immediately within a period of around 2 to 3 months maximum.
This category is known as F-1. The second category/priority covers the spouse, unmarried sons and daughters of the US residents, holding a valid green card and fulfilling the condition of prescribed stay in the USA. The family visa applicants covered under this category have to wait for about 4 to 5 years or even more, depending upon the visa number availability. As soon as the sons and daughters get married, they are not considered eligible for family immigration visa issuance under this category. The third category/priority covers married sons and daughters of US citizens.
