Today the rate of divorce is on the rise. The average length of time a couple seems to be married is two years. Each wedding anniversary truly marks the great accomplishment in a marriage. An anniversary marks another year of being able to get along and handle the challenges that come across in a marriage. A special anniversary is the fiftieth. A fifty-year anniversary marks a half-century of marriage. A special anniversary definitely requires a special gift for a couple that has been able to keep it together for so long. The following are some anniversary gift ideas for a couple that have been married for fifty years.

A gift certificate to a bed and breakfast. You can purchase one for the weekend. The happy couple will love spending special time together in a romantic setting such as a bed and breakfast. There are many different bed and breakfast locations. I bet you can even find one close to where they live. For a couple that is adventures and loves to travel you could pick a bed and breakfast that is located more away from home.

Get a personalized wedding platter for their anniversary. Online there is a website called Prefect Wedding.com. You can buy a personalized wedding platter starting from $35 dollars. You can have whatever you want written on the platter. A example would be 50th Wedding Anniversary - Mary and Fred Rogers. Then have anyone who is special to them have their signature on the plate.

For their anniversary create a scrapbook. Collect pictures of the couple from the time they were married. If possible have a picture of the couple representing every year. Have a special message written at the end of the scrapbook. You can also write the story of how the happy couple met. This will be a wonderful gift that they will enjoy and help bring back some of those great memories.

Joan (my Starter Wife and Trophy Wife, depending on my mood) and I will have our 50th anniversary in June, 2008. Right now our plans are to take the children and grandchildren on a cruise. We really do not want a celebration and party but, to us, our greatest gift would be to have the entire gang with us. I had been looking for a three-carrot ring (see my article on the subject published 9/18/06) but it looks like that will be unsuccessful.
